What's News

December 15 2000

This is our last What's News for 2000. Everyone in ALG Administration would like to thank you all for your support over the past year. Have a very happy Christmas and safe holidays and we will see you in 2001!

ALG successfully migrated

The ALG database was successfully migrated to its new operating platform on Wednesday 13 December. The Gateway is now using the same platform that the redeveloped Inter Library Resource Sharing Directory will use. The ILRS data will be migrated in January, so there is still time to check your ALG entry for accuracy, as this will be used as your base library information in the ILRS directory.

Anyone who tried to update their entry on Wednesday would not have been able to make any changes. Update access has now been fully restored.

New field in your database entry

There is now a new field available in the "Related organisations" change form. It is now possible to indicate your library's membership in professional associations.

In a new section of this page, labelled "Memberships" you will find a drop down list of the acronyms of the best known library professional associations. Simply highlight each acronym that applies to your library and press the "Select" button to move it into the list labelled "Your memberships". If you withdraw from an association you can remove the membership by highlighting it and pressing the "Remove" button.

If you belong to an association that is not already included in the list please email the details to the admin team at alg@nla.gov.au and we will arrange for it to be added.

Online internet access policies

With the increase in Internet access through the move to PCs in many reading rooms, libraries are having to face the issue of reasonable access for readers. If you are wondering what other libraries have done in the face of this problem you can use the 'Advanced search' option of the Gateway to find any Internet public use policies libraries have provided links to from their entries. There are 95 libraries with such links in ALG

Go to Advanced search and check the box beside "Internet public use policy" before you submit your search.

LibDex

A new finding aid for libraries world-wide has recently been added to the "Libraries outside Australia" page in the "For libraries" section of the ALG site.

LibDex is a worldwide directory of library homepages, web-based OPACs, Friends of the Library pages, and library e-commerce affiliate links.
