Comprehensive to be removed from ALG subject collecting levels

In response to your feedback, we are currently revising the subject level collection definitions listed for the Australian Libraries Gateway. As the first part of that change, the 'Comprehensive' level will shortly be removed as an option as it is used (and achieved) by so few Australian libraries.

Libraries that had subjects at the 'Comprehensive' level as of late last week have already been contacted about the change. When the 'Comprehensive' collecting level is removed, all subjects with this level assigned will be changed to 'Research'. More information about the subject collecting levels within the Gateway is available within the online 'Help'.

To change your subject collecting levels, just select 'Edit this entry' at the bottom of your library's entry and select the 'Subject collecting information' online update form at login. Online help for updating your subject levels is also available.

If you find that you can only access the first level of subjects (ie the second and third level subjects just don't appear on your screen) then it is likely you have found our bug! There have been problems experienced using the 'Subject collecting information' online update form under versions 5 of Netscape and Internet Explorer (IE). We think we have fixed the problem, but if you do have any difficulties using the 'Subject collecting information' update form, please telephone 02 6262 1137 or email ALG Administration at alg@nla.gov.au with details of the changes you would like made.

New 'GST and libraries' page

A new page has been added to the Gateway to help Australian libraries keep abreast of the issues relating to the new goods and services tax (GST) and libraries. Email alg@nla.gov.au if you know about any other links which you consider useful additions.

[Australian Interlibrary Lending Resource Sharing (ILRS) Directory] We have also had enquiries recently about including information about continued acceptance of ALIA vouchers for interlibrary lending within Gateway entries. Libraries should feel free to include this information within their ALG entries if they wish to. The 'General comments' field (accessible at the end the 'Collection details' online update form) is the most useful place to put this detail until such time as the redeveloped Australian Interlibrary Lending Resource Sharing (ILRS) Directory is up. When the time comes to migrate the old ILRS service to the new, we will run a report to harvest this information from ALG for the ILRS Directory.

While many Australian libraries currently use the Gateway for interlibrary lending and document delivery purposes, it is not a surrogate ILRS Directory. The NUC link from KineticaWeb to library entries in ALG will ultimately be replaced with a link to the corresponding entries in the ILRS Directory.

NUC searching

In response to considerable comment from our users, we're pleased to announce that NUC symbol searching is now accessible from the 'Standard search' screen of the Gateway! You can now select to search on library "Name" by keyword, phrase or NUC symbol.

The method of searching for NUC symbols within the 'Advanced search' option remains unchanged. As we've said, ALG does not replicate the Australian ILRS Directory and so it does not include all Australian NUC symbols - only those which relate to an *individual* library. If you are interested is providing us with your comments for the ILRS redevelopment, please do so via the ILRS-L discussion list.
