For every legitimate home based business opportunity available on the Internet today, there are another fifty that aren't. And when you do actually find a home based business opportunity that looks interesting, how you do figure out if it's a match for your needs, skills, wants and desires? Is the Home Based Business Opportunity Registered?

Take a peek at the Better Business Bureau listings (http://bbbonline.com/) and see if the company you are dealing with is listed. Better yet, contact the city that the organization is doing business in, and see if they have purchased a business licence, belong to their local chamber of commerce, or have an affiliation with local business groups.

Direct sales companies may be registered with the Direct Sales ASsociation (http://www.dsa.org). And even if the company you are looking at isn't registered with any of these organizations, someone with whom you speak with may be able to provide more information regarding the legitimacy of the business in question.

What Pay Structure Does the Home Based Business Opportunity Offer?

Freelance writers, for instance, usually get paid when their articles are published, not when they write them. Many direct sales companies expect you to front the cash for supplies, products and marketing, and reimburse your commissions on a monthly or quarterly basis.

You also need to consider how, and when you will receive payment. Will you receive a check in the mail? Direct deposit? Pay Pal? Reimbursement on products purchased?

Make sure that you have all of these payment policies in writing from all of the companies you are researching before making a decision about your home based business opportunity. Later on, when you sit and compare your options, the benefits and drawbacks may make your decision blatantly clear.

What are the Minimum Number of Hours/Sales/Quotas that You are Required to Make With this Home Based Business Opportunity?

Depending on what kind of business you have chosen, there are most likely some sort of benchmarks required. Almost all of the direct sales companies require a minimum amount of sales during a fixed time period in order to stay active, and all of the reception, text messaging, customer service, or discussion board opportunities require a minimum amount of hours logged into the service in order to be paid.

For instance, while I worked as an online transcriptionist (albeit for a very short period of time! ), I had to maintain an error-free typing speed of 80 words per minute in order to continue my contract work. As soon as I wasn't able to consistently meet this target, my account was closed. My last paycheck with a termination notice arrived in the mail shortly thereafter, citing work performance issues as the reason for termination.

If your business focuses on sales, however, make sure that you have calculated how much product you will need to move on a weekly or monthly basis in order to meet your basic financial needs.

When you've gathered all of this information, compile it all in once place. If you are comparing companies, take a couple of minutes and create a comparison chart. It should become readily apparent which companies you should look into more, and which aren't a suitable home based business opportunity.
