Asian
countries represent various stages of economic and political
development, and possess dynamic potential for increased
growth. The United States is an important source of technology,
equipment and services to the countries in the region.
The
U.S. Trade and Development Agency advances economic development
and U.S. commercial interests in developing and middle-income
countries. The agency funds various forms of technical
assistance, feasibility studies, training, orientation visits
and business workshops that support the development of a modern
infrastructure and a fair and open trading environment. USTDA's
strategic use of foreign assistance funds to support sound
investment policy and decision-making in host countries creates
an enabling environment for trade, investment and sustainable
economic development. In carrying out its mission, USTDA gives
emphasis to economic sectors that may benefit from U.S. exports
of goods and services.
Since
1981, USTDA has provided more than $216 million for studies and
other assistance for infrastructure projects in Asia. The
agency's investments in these projects have generated nearly
$8.7 billion in U.S. exports. USTDA grants have supported a
wide range of projects in both the public and private sectors in
Asia, spanning a wide range of industries, including the
environment, transportation, health-care, telecommunications,
information technology energy and power.
