Lawsuit challenges behavioral profiling at Boston's Logan Airport
BOSTON The A-C-L-U is suing Massachusetts authorities over a "behavior pattern recognition" program at Boston's Logan airport that allows police to question suspicious people. The lawsuit against the state Port Authority and the state police contends the technique encourages racial and ethnic profiling. The A-C-L-U's national coordinator for racial profiling says police harassed him at Logan while he made a phone call. King Downing says police had no reason to ask for his I-D. He refused to show it until he was arrested, but was then released. Downing says he was not acting suspiciously and thinks he was the victim of racial profiling because he is black. State police insist they focus on behavior: loitering without luggage, wearing heavy clothes on a hot day and watching security methods. Security at Logan was overhauled after the Nine-Eleven attacks. Two of the hijacked planes that crashed into the World Trade Center took off from there. Copyright 2004 Associated Press.
