The Connection between Your Self and Your Home Business
A Home Business Article Contributed by Sharon Hill
Is it All an Ego Connection, this Home Business Ownership?
While a strong sense of self-confidence is crucial to your home business, if the connection between your belief in your own self-worth and your home business success is too strong, you run the risk of destroying your self-esteem should you have business setbacks as you grow your new home business. And you can take this to the bank - you will have setbacks. You may even "fail" before you succeed.
Believe in yourself, believe in the folks who work for you, but work on finding other ways to enhance your pride in yourself, your sense of accomplishment besides your connection to the success of your home business. In other words, take time to smell the roses. Or, to use another apt cliche, don't put your ego eggs all in one basket.
Distance the Connection Between Self and Home Business
Keep in mind always that you and your home business have a connection, yes, - a strong one, of course. But you are not one and the same. You are not defined by how your business succeeds. You are, rather, defined by how you treat the rest of the human race and how you treat yourself.
In other words, it isn't the success or failure of your home business that should be the connection to your sense of pride, but rather the way you handle that success or failure. And the way you enhance the quality of life for yourself and your community - whether it is a global, or a local community.
Your sense of pride, your sense of self-worth, and your sense of accomplishment could be even more enhanced by volunteer projects, as you can sit back with a sense of pride in your ability to give to others. You can take home a sense of liking yourself and your behavior as a member of the human race when you pick up a hammer for Habitat for Humanity, cook pancakes for the American Legion breakfast, read a book to a shut-in at a nursing home, or give out food at the local food bank.
Break the Connection Slightly - It's Good for Your Home Business
And this slight distancing of the connection between you and your home business is not only good for your well being - it's actually good for your business' well being as well. Stepping away from thoughts of work, taking a break, clearing your head, getting some fresh air, fun and physical exercise can actually stimulate your brainstorming brain cells, your creativity, your objectivity and your enjoyment of you owning your own business. Your business may, in fact, succeed more by your working less.
You've probably seen this happen more than once in your own life, if you think about it. Have you ever said to anyone, as the two of you are trying to remember some piece of trivia, "It's somewhere in the back of my head but I just can't think of it now. I'll stop trying and I bet I'll wake up in the middle of the night and it'll pop into my head." That's a very good example of the value of giving yourself a break and feeding the endorphins and brain cells that get the creative and memory juices going.
Take a break. You and your business will both feel better for it.
