Here we are again, the end of the year. Last year I did pretty well with my prognostications, mainly because I chose carefully. This time, I'm feeling a bit more reckless. AOL is not new to the Webmail game, but so far has restricted its Web e-mail interface to subscribers. In 2005 WOL will launch a free Webmail service in competition with Gmail, Hotmail, and Yahoo! Mail, thereby filling out the Webmail landscape with entries from the four major Internet giants.

Folks have been predicting a big year for mergers and acquisitions in 2005, and we are starting the year with a bang. I have learnt exclusively that Six Apart, the parent company behind hosted blogging service TypePad, and Moveable Type is about to acquire Live Journal, for an undisclosed amount. The deal is a mix of stock and cash, and could be announced sometime later this month, according to those close to the two companies. If the deal goes through, then Six Apart will become one of the largest weblog companies in the world, with nearly 6.5 million users. It also gives the company a very fighting chance against Google’s Blogger and Microsoft’s MSN Spaces.

There's been a lot of discussion about Google Suggest, which provides potential words and phrases depending on what you type into the query box. There's a similar tool available using a couple of dictionaries instead of the Web. It's called ObjectGraph Dictionary and it's available at http://www.objectgraph.com/dictionary .

A WEB SITE has published a list of products and projects Microsoft is readying for 2005. The report is lengthy and according to Steven Bink, who runs website bink.nu, the list is based both on facts and on assumptions. Highlights include Antivirus and Antispyware 2005, Longhorn Server beta one and the client beta, Office 12 beta, and Istanbul Voice over IP client. A number of 64-bit products is being readied too, including Biztalk 2004 and the awfully long awaited Windows XP 64.

After it was announced that Cindy McCaffrey, Google’s vice president of corporate marketing, was leaving Google, there had been a bit of stir in their next steps for marketing plans. It was only ten years ago a friend and I decided to open Western Canada's first cybercafe, the Underground Onramp. Equipped with T1 fiber and 26 networked Pentiums, the Onramp was an amazing place. The cybercafe, which lated 18-months was eventually pushed out of business by the harshest of business realities, financial hemorrhage. Those were the earliest days of the public Internet, a short time before the public net became the commercial net. There were only a handful of search tools back then showing what would today be considered a tiny segment of the web, approximately 1Million pages. Several factors limited the number of references available but the most obvious two were lack of content in the early days, and the inability of search engine spiders to read much of what was on the Internet.
