Watching social trends is a good way to know if a small business is a good one to start. Social trends determine which goods are built and sold. Many small business opportunities started out of changes in the social trends.
Back in the 1920s they would have laughed at anyone who started a small business that catered to a low carbs lifestyle. But health conscious social trends at the beginning of the 2000s led to a lot of business opportunity marketing products to health conscious Americans looking to cut carbs from their diets.
The challenge for budding entrepreneurs is to see if they can find small business ideas to start in any of our current social trends.

One current social trend which is leading to small business opportunity is the increasing power of women in America. Studies have shown that the earning gap between the genders is still decreasing and will soon be non existent. Many entrepreneurs are starting small businesses which cater to women who have more money and less time than ever before.
The changing face of America is another trend that might lead you to a good small business idea to start. The number of immigrants is slowly changing the face of America. Estimates from the US Census bureau predict that Hispanics will make up 25% of the US population by 2050. Many small businesses will be started to cater to the new population of America.
An insatiable desire for technological products is a social trend that has already led to the start of many small businesses. If looking to start a small business that caters to this social trend, however, use caution. Make sure it is not a trend that will ripple through America quickly and be gone, leaving you with a small business that caters to a dead market.

One social trend about to come in America is the retirement of the Baby Boomers generation. The Baby Boomers is broad range of people covering everyone born from 1946 through 1964. They will continue entering retirement in droves until the year 2029 when the last of them will hit 65 years of age. If you can think of a small business to start that will cater to Baby Boomers in their retirement years, you are pretty much guaranteed your market will be around for awhile.
Another anticipated social trend is a turn back towards religion. As some people continue to turn away from traditional religious beliefs and services, other people return to them more vigorously. Fears brought on my uncertain times in the 2000s are bringing more people back to their religious faith. A small business started for this social trend could prove very prosperous.
