Get it for the Scares, Keep it for the Laughs
Disney/Pixar has created a homerun with their latest animated film. They turn the world of monsters on its head, with hilarious results.Monsters James P. Sullivan, "Sulley" (John Goodman) and Mike Wazowski (Billy Crystal) work for Monsters, Inc. - a company that collects children's screams and turns them into electricity. All is well until a child makes it through the closet door into the monster world. Then it's up to Sulley and Wazowski to try to get her back, and save her from the evil plans of Randall, the lizard. The wise-cracks are almost constant in the film, making it enjoyable for both children and adults. Parents do not need to worry about the monsters in the film. They are, almost entirely, humorous and non-threatening. There is little to be frightened by. However, I would caution parents that the characters frequently use the words: "stupid", "idiot", and "shut up". The collector's edition 2-disc DVD contains a plethora of never-before seen footage on a separate 207-minute bonus CD. It includes the animated shorts of "Mike's New Car," and "For the Birds", the filmmaker's audio commentary, a sneak peak at Disney/Pixar's summer 2003 film, "Finding Nemo," the Outtakes from Monster's Inc. and much, much more. The amount of material on the bonus CD is unimaginable. It includes a tour of Pixar's animation studies, never-before-seen deleted scenes, a 3D location flyaround, hundreds of images from the Monstropolis Art Gallery, animation gags and a guide to "in" jokes from the film, an interactive game, and material about being an employee at Monsters, Inc. If you're debating between the video and the DVD, definitely purchase the DVD. The picture and sound quality is superb, and the additional footage is worth the price.
 A must-see in the Disney/Pixar collection!
My boyfriend and I walked into the theatre on opening night to find an alarming amount of couples and groups in their late teens/early twenties. I guess I thought a group of 16 year olds would think themselves to be "too adult" to walk into a children's movie. And a children's movie it was, too. Disney movies are usually laced with sexual overtones and other adult themes. Monsters, Inc pleasantly surprised me with its lack of such things. It was wholesome and honest and touched a heartstring way down deep, as almost all Disney movies tend to do. Monsters, Inc features the voices of John Goodman and Billy Crystal as James P. Sullivan (Sulley) and Mike Wazowski, two fun loving monsters. They're best friends and work together as partners at the local energy company, Monsters, Inc. An odd sort of energy company, it collects screams from human children to generate power. Human children are known to be deadly to the touch and scream collectors at Monsters, Inc are some of the bravest creatures in the land. Of course, what's a movie without a bad guy? Steve Buscemi plays Randall, a chameleon sort of creature who is the Number 2 scream collector (below Sulley, of course) at Monsters, Inc. Greedy and conniving, Randall will do almost anything to gain #1 status, even if it means harming an innocent child. As seen in the previews, a human child does get through the doors at Monsters, Inc despite all the precautions. Sulley and Mike find out they're not lethal after all and frightening them to collect their screams is not the best way to solve the energy shortage. The child, who Sulley dubs "Boo" is just about the most adorable rendition of a child I've ever seen in animation. Her voice is done by a real little girl, Mary Gibbs which just adds to the realism. You'll find yourself giddy watching little Boo run all over the place, having fun being a kid while Sulley and Mike try to "cope" with their "problem" - having a "toxic" child on the loose. Disney has hit the nail on the head this time and has finally perfected making a movie that children and adults will love to watch without sections going over the child's head. If you just want to sit down for 90 minutes and laugh, Monsters, Inc should be the first place you stop.
A big Kid at Heart
I was in the library with my niece and she grabbed this DVD. How can you say no to someone with the most adorable eyes. So I checked out the DVD, we went home and had a wonderful, wonderful time. This is the kind of movie you can appreciate no matter how young or old you are. James P Sullivan (voiced by John Goodman), and Mike Wazowski (voiced by Billy Crystal) are monsters who work for Monsters Inc. Sulley is the best at getting his fair share of scares, but he has some competition in Randall who wants to be the top scare monster. The more screams collected, the more energy for Montropolis. The monsters are led to believe that if a child enters their "world" they will be contaminated and everything could be destroyed. The real fun part starts when this adorable human child named Marry (Boo buy Sulley) sneaks into Montropolis by accident. The kids are scared of the monsters, and the monsters are terrifiedof the kids. Sully and Mike try to get Boo back to her world, but she won't leave. Turns out Randall is her scary monster. Also turns out that Randal has a plan up his sleeve to extract screams that could put the other monsters out of work. It's up to Sully and Mike to save Montroplis and Monsters Inc. This is a fun, entertaining film that will leave with a happy, happy feeling when it's all over. Steve Bucemis I the voice for Randal Boggs, and other notable actors are James Coburn, and Jennifer Tilly (who has the perfect voice for animation, she should do more of it!!!) and Bonnie Hunt. This is an adorable movie. One I will watch again, with or without my niece.
