Tsunami Relief Efforts U.S. response and how you can help
President Bush (Jan. 10): USAID has delivered food, temporary shelter, hygiene kits and supplies to help people survive. In other words, we've been focused on the relief effort; now we're beginning to focus on rehabilitation and rebuilding. And as a result, USAID is arranging small loans for those whose livelihoods have been destroyed. Lamu Cultural Festival Embassy Nairobi was the principal supporter of the annual Lamu Cultural Festival, held July 30- Aug. 1, 2004. Amb. William Bellamy attended many of the Festival’s activities, which included a Kiswahili poetry competition, dhow, swimming, canoe, and donkey races plus displays of traditional crafts and skills, concerts of taarab music, and traditional dances. Both Lamu and Pate Islands are part of Kenya’s predominately Muslim coastal region. In photo at left, Ambassador Bellamy presents first prize to one of the swimming champions.
Secretary Powell Meets With Brazilian Youth Ambassadors Secretary of State Powell and Assistant Secretary for Western Hemisphere Affairs Noriega met with a group of Brazilian "Youth Ambassadors" at the State Department on January 10. The exchange program, begun in 2002, allows highly qualified, disadvantaged Brazilian youth to travel to the United States to broaden their understanding of the U.S., improve their English skills, experience life with an American family, and project a positive image of Brazil to those Americans that they meet.
