Bureau of European and Eurasian AffairsThe Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs, headed by Assistant Secretary A. Elizabeth Jones, implements U.S. foreign policy in Europe and Eurasia. The Bureau promotes U.S. interests in the region on issues such as national security, NATO enlargement, coordination with the European Union and other regional organizations, support for democracy, human rights, civil society, economic prosperity, the war on terrorism, and nonproliferation. ********************** Travel to Europe Secretary Powell met with Sergei Lavrov (Minister of Foreign Affairs, Russia) and Jack Straw (U.K. Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs) at the NATO-Russia Council. On December 8, Secretary Powell officially presented the painting, "The Key and the Parade" by the Dutch-American artist Willem de Kooning to NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer. While in Bulgaria attending OSCE Ministerial meetings, Secretary Powell met with young people in Sofia.
