Mini guide to Atlanta
Georgia’s capital has become known as one of the most exciting and fascinating cities to visit in the southern United States., especially since hosting the 1996 Olympic games.
The Five Points intersection, a star-shaped crossing of streets, forms the centre of the city. Here you will find the main business district and some great shopping. East of Five Points is Sweet Auburn, the African-American downtown during the days of segregation and now a home to some interesting sites and great soul-food restaurants. North of Five Points is Midtown, a trendy nightlife area, and west of downtown is West End, the oldest neighborhood in the city.
Near Five points you will find the fabulous 19th-century shopping mall, Underground Atlanta, the exquisite 1889 gilt domed State Capital, and CNN Center.
In the Sweet Auburn neighborhood you can find the Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Site, built to honor America’s greatest civil rights leader, and the African American Panoramic Experience, which has exhibits and a movie about the neighborhoods history.
Buckhead, a suburb of Atlanta, is the home to many of the wealthiest people in the area. Located here are the Atlanta History Center and the Atlanta History Museum.
