Kealakehe raises freshmen standards

About 40 percent of incoming freshmen at Kealakehe High can't read at a seventh-grade level, said Jim Young, English department chair.

Some students' reading ability match that of a fourth grader, according to school assessments. There are similar struggles in mathematics.

HPA alumni shoots, directs, edits feature film
As a University of Southern California graduate student, Ari Bernstein had more film than food in his refrigerator. Over three years, this filmmaker and 1994 Hawaii Preparatory Academy alumnus stored snippets of 16mm film in the empty appliance. The collection grew to be almost 12,000 feet in length.
