Caring for Mothers in their Time of Need
Every
minute, another woman dies needlessly in the agony of childbirth.
She may leave behind a devastated family, and young children who
will fail to thrive. And for every woman who dies, about 20 more
are injured or disabled.
The
tragedy is that almost all of these deaths – an estimated 529,000
a year – are preventable, Yet while most other health indicators
have improved in the developing world over the last decades, maternal
mortality and morbidity continue to
take their high toll.
Reducing maternal mortality is a
priority area for UNFPA, which supports safe motherhood interventions
in 89 countries, as part of its commitment to reproductive health.
This work is facilitated by a strong network of partners, a wealth
of experience and a broad presence at the country level.
