Site Build
Everything from the site plan to the finished profitable e-business, unlike the world an e-business isnt built in 7 days.
Once you have the idea and done your research and feasibility study there are multiple steps to building a successful e-commerce site.
Find and register a domain name: Getting a catchy or applicable domain name. What market you are targeting, does it need to be (.co.uk) or (.com) etc. registering it.
Plan and design the site
Build the site: Out sourcing or built in house.
Hosting the site: Comparing prices, reliability and expansion needs for growth.
Accept payments: Arrange a merchant account and choose a payment provider, based on rates, reputation and easy of integration into site.
Secure the site: Payment providers will advise you on this, make sure the correct symbols and notification is shown on the site.
Testing: Intensive testing, covering every conceivable method of navigating and purchasing. If the site has bugs better to have them before you go live.
Marketing: By now you should have planned out exactly how you are going to market your site. This will probably be a mixture of optimisation, affiliates, pay per clicks, banners, offline (magazines) etc.
Maintenance: This will involve everything from changing descriptions or price of a product to backing up the database every night. It will also include the monitoring of traffic, how many hits and day, what times they enter the site, what the entry to purchase ratio is. This data in invaluable for analysis.
When the site is up and running, unfortunately in most cases, you dont simply sit back and watch the money role in. If you snooze you lose!
Get on with running your business...
The site will need to be constantly evolving the stay ahead of the rest. Once its proved to be successful in one country, look into globalisation.
Stay up to date on the latest trends, products, prices.
Constantly monitor the traffic through the site, it well dip and the marketing will need to be tweaked or changed.
Look at ways of keeping customers on your site longer, or brand awareness where they will remember you and mention it to others.
Competitions and periodic sales.
