Bandanna-bedizened violinist Pavel Sporcl joins classical guitarist Lubomir Brabec for a concert in a series featuring master musicians. Feb. 3 at 7:30, Spanelska synagoga

One of several events raising money to help tsunami disaster victims has pianist Gayathri Khemadasa playing modern works by Czech composers like Kabelac, Pelikan and Janacek, plus some Philip Glass and Eric Satie. Tickets are available at Divadlo Archa. Money from this event is specifically targeted for Sri Lanka, and the event is organized by Artists for Sri Lanka. After a bit of inaction, the Opera 2005 festival roars back to life with Norma at the Estates Theater Feb. 2 and The Brandenburgers in Bohemia at the State Opera Feb. 6. Both are by visiting companies from Moravia.

Three plays are presented with English titles at Svandovo divadlo. Martin McDonagh's The Lieutenant of Inishmore explores life on an Irish island inhabited by a young terrorist and an anarchist, Feb. 3 at 7. Another production, Gogol's The Wedding, is a classic Russian comedy, Feb. 5 at 7. The dark drama Killer Joe is set in a trailer park, Feb. 7 at 7

Laterna magika specializes in tourist-friendly nonverbal shows, some of which have been running for decades. They are adding a new title to the lineup. Argonauts is based on the ancient legend of Jason and golden fleece. Feb. 8 at 8 (preview), Feb. 9 at 8 (premiere), Laterna magika

No need to wait for summer for music festivals. Winter Rock for People brings together lots of local bands including Divokej Bill, Vypsana fixa, Skyline, and Radim Hladik and Blue Effect. Feb. 4 at 5, Abaton

Another tsunami-relief concert features Djazwa Kartel and Different D.I.S.C.O. Feb. 4 at 6:30, Palac Akropolis

A second event by Artists for Sri Lanka has top-notch dance bands Umakart, Khoiba, Roe Deer, Lety Mimo and Al Yaman. Money will go specifically to tsunami relief for Sri Lanka. Feb. 6 at 6, Roxy

A tsunami-relief concert with a bit of a harder musical edge has metal band Arakain with support from Petr Kolar and Harlej. Feb. 9 at 9, Futurum

The ongoing EuroConnections series puts northern French salsa and Latin ska band La Familia on the same bill with local ska band Vertigo. Feb. 9 at 7:30, Palac Akropolis

Some members of T.H.C. (The Human Cell) formed Mindway with other musicians in 2003. The band blends metal, hip hop and ethno music and they are unveiling their new promo DVD. Feb. 9 at 8, Rock Cafe

OTHER

Easter comes very early this year and that pushes up the loosely related movable feast of Masopust, the local version of Mardi Gras. Events take place in Zizkov, Feb. 4-8. Mala Strana has a celebration in Kampa park on Feb. 5. There are some related classical concerts during the week as well. See Stage, page B2.
