Why don't I just join one of those automated schemes which promise me thousands of links?

These sites, known as "Link Farms", are regarded very poorly by the search engines, and some may even harm your ranking. Our experience with automated link exchange software has shown that webmasters are often unlikely to respond to these link requests, as they are regarded as "SPAM".

Who should I exchange links with then?

Search Engine expert Ken Evoy's golden rule is to treat search engines as you would human users. Therefore, if you are building links out from your site in order to have reciprocal links come back in, there should always be some kind of connections between the two sites. Your links pages should also be categorised by subject. For example, if you had a website specialising in cheap flights to Paris, it would be perfectly acceptable to exchange links with other travel related sites, sites about Paris, or individual hotels, tourist attractions, and airlines. However, there would be no relevance in linking to a site about online gambling, or personal loans.
