Web sites are created to entice visitors other than their creators. They are meant for the whole world to see, so, the roads that lead visitors to them should be carefully paved. These roads can be different, and one of them is called search engine optimization (or SEO). Perhaps the longest and the hardest road to take but if you are patient enough to learn, work, wait, and work again it will lead you to success and your web site to fame it deserves. Just do not stop too early.

SEO is hard to learn. Well, it might seem easy at first, but do not let yourself be deceived. SEO basics and tips are repeated across the web again and again on numerous SEO-related sites, forums and blogs, and every time it runs along the same lines. Content and links, links and content is there really so much you need to learn to provide your web site with content and links, if these two factors are so important for SEO?

If you think it is so easy, then answer the obvious question: where to get links pointing to your site? Why should other web site designers be willing to link to you? Well, they do their own SEO. This means, they need links pointing to their sites as much as you do. So, the first thought that comes readily to your mind is to make a fair deal out of it: I will link to your site if you link to mine.

Now you are learning SEO. Not bad. Just some tips before you start:

• Try and find sites that are relevant to yours in theme – that will make your link exchange more beneficial for both parties;
• Never link to sites if you doubt their quality and value, even if they offer you more than one link in return;
• Never say things like “if you do not link to my site within a week I will have no choice but to remove your link” – instead, try to explain why your own web site is worth linking to;
• Web sites that rank high for your targeted keywords, are the best for your purpose.

Yet, it is not the only way. There is certain type of web sites that just dream about someone to come and suggest a site to link to. These sites are called directories, and their sole purpose is to link to sites – in order to categorize the web and make manual search for web sites easier. Find them and submit your site to them.

Directory submission tips :: learn and use

• Choose the biggest ones first: they are more likely to have authority. When you’ve run short of them, turn your attention to smaller ones, as they, too, add to your link popularity – and may even bring you direct traffic. Granted, people coming from directories are, most often, other SEOs seeking for link exchange opportunities – but why not?
• Vary your titles and descriptions: search engines like variety.
• Submit manually: search for the category that fits your web site best.
• Always read and follow the guidelines: That increases your chances of being accepted.
• Only pay for inclusion when you are sure the directory is good enough for that.
• Exchange links with good directories: other people will be grateful to you for having a list of good directories on your site.

Keep away from link farms. Every good SEO knows how to tell a directory from a link farm: the latter has no categories – and, as a rule, looks very ugly.
