Lake Balaton
Beautiful Lake Balaton, Central Europe's largest freshwater lake, some 60 miles southwest of Budapest, is Hungary's number one vacation resort and a major wine-producing region. Easily reached by car, bus or train, Balaton offers dozens of resort hotels for longer stays. The north shore of the lake is noted for its resorts, wineries and spas.
Siófok
With its shore of 17 kilometres Siófok is the longest settlement of the Lake. Resort place of bustling life with heavy traffic. Its port has the heaviest ship traffic at Balaton as well. Extraordinary series of programme (festival, concerts, sport events, exhibitions) are provided during the summer season.
Balatonfüred
Small town of 13500 inhabitants, centre of the north-eastern region of Balaton, the first medical resort town (treating mainly heart diseases) of Hungary. Balatonfüred is the centre of the historic wine region named after the town.
Besides the various touristical sights of the city, it offers to the visitors several programmes: Sail-Setting Festival, Whitsuntide International Festival of children's choirs, Anna Ball, Wine Weeks from the middle of August and several facilities of nice excursions around the town.
Tihany
Jutting into the lake, the Tihany Peninsula is one of the country's most interesting national parks and site of a Benedictine abbey founded in 1055. The town offers a wide variety of programmes of arts in Tihany Summer (opera performances, concerts, organ concerts, folk dances, farces, vintage procession etc.).
Fonyód
The extraordinary position of the town with two hills rising above a the plain Nagyberek makes a special atmosphere. It is famous for the Triathlon sports tournament in the second weekend of July. One of the most frequently visited and most spectacular programmes of the town is the stall-keepers' fair on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Keszthely
Town of almost 23000 inhabitants at the north-western corner of Balaton. One of the largest cities of Balaton shore, traditional cultural city. It has a nice old city centre with historic monuments, museums, cultural programmes.
