VR-S/1 High-speed MiniSub

Not just another subwoofer!
Sure, there are plenty of subs out there, if you don't care about clarity! It's quite simple to generate a lot of noise on explosions, but when your sub makes a kettle-drum roll sound like a train going by, your system is going to sound muddy! The Von Schweikert VR-S/1 High-speed Subwoofer was designed to react as quickly as any main speaker on the market, with the lowest levels of distortion and hangover, enabling the VR-S/1 to completely integrate with your system.
The VR-S/1's high speed and low distortion was achieved by engineering a very specialized woofer combined with an amplifier that is pre-programmed with the required response target. As an extra benefit, the cabinet size has been greatly reduced with our new technology.

HEROIC WOOFER
Fast, clean sound requires a very stiff cone that cannot flex and add distortion, a very powerful motor, and a suspension system that will not allow the woofer to continue ringing after the note has ended. We have selected a very strong carbon fiber impregnated resin for the cone, driven by a large 70mm voice coil. The 15- pound magnetic assembly can accelerate the cone with very high Force Factor, requiring an extremely stiff suspension to provide mechanical braking. To enable high volume levels at 20 Hz, we have utilized a very long throw design with 1.5" peak-to-peak excursion potential. The end result is a beefy driver that can provide very high volume levels of extremely clean sound!
PRE-PROGRAMMED AMPLIFIER
Our design target was to achieve very fast transient response combined with electromechanical braking of the driver in between notes; in addition, a 20 Hz frequency response was specified for this design. These requirements dictated electronic pre-equalization, which also compensates for the small volume of air inside the cabinet. To enable very high output levels at low frequencies, we specified a High-Current amplifier with 300-watt r.m.s. and 600-watt peaks. The design is a push-pull Darlington circuit with high bias into Class A operation in the preamp stage; to eliminate distortion on peaks, a High Current power supply with 1 KV transformer is utilized.
CABINET DESIGN
To enable total room bass envelopment, we utilized a sealed cabinet with down-firing woofer. The 25mm MDF cabinet walls are damped by a shelf brace at the midpoint of the wall, stiffening the cabinet to eliminate resonance and coloration. To eliminate cavity resonance, Dacron is used at 100% stuffing density. Two-inch tall spikes elevate the down-firing woofer off of the floor, enabling 360-degree dispersion, which helps reduce standing waves by providing differing path lengths to the room boundaries. In the event that the VR-S/1 is to be used inside a wall unit, it can be placed on it's side, with the woofer firing forward. As the woofer is not visible, the cabinet has a very clean appearance and is finished in a variety of hardwood veneers with polyester resin clear coat.
Finishes available are: black ash, dark red cherry, blonde maple, and African Hazelwood.

Cabinet Design : |
Sealed enclosure with 25mm MDF walls, using shelf bracing to eliminate cabinet resonance and coloration; cavity resonance is eliminated with 100% Dacron stuffing. |
Woofer : |
10" Extreme-Duty driver with very stiff cone formed from carbon fiber impregnated plastic resin, which is suspended by a double-thick butyl rubber surround with long-throw design (1.5" peak-to-peak excursion potential).
