The 14th century mighty defense castle is one of the most famous monuments in Milan. It was completely remodeled by Francesco Sforza. In the middle of the fortress front-facade is situated the clocktower, 70 m high. Through the gate you reach the innercourt, that was used as exercise square. On both sides of the court there are gates with drawbridges. Today, the Castello houses municipal museums devoted variously to Egyptian and other antiquities, musical instruments, paintings, and sculpture. Highlights are the Sala delle Asse, a frescoed room still sometimes attributed to Leonardo da Vinci, and Michelangelo's unfinished Rondanini Pieta, believed to be his last work. Behind the castle, Parco Sempione is a 47-hectare (116-acre) park with plenty of places to stroll, an interesting arena that was inaugurated by Napoleon and the Municipal Aquarium.
