Severe storms batter southeast Australia.

Some very severe storms with hail and thunder have struck the southeastern corner of Australia. At Scoresby, near Melbourne, there has been 145mm of rain up to 2300 GMT on Wednesday, nearly three times the average, and Melbourne itself has similarly suffered. The airport has recorded 129mm of rain with gusts up to 46 knots, and a lowest ever February daytime maximum. It only reached 12 Celsius on Wednesday, the average usually 26 degrees.

Cold air takes hold over Siberia.

Over Russia and northern China the temperatures have taken a turn downwards. At Krasnoufimsk, Russia they plummeted to minus 33.4 degrees, and in Tulihe, China it was minus 38.5 degrees. Tulihe's average minimum is minus 32 in February. In Kazakhstan it was even colder though, with a minimum of minus 39.8 degrees at Kokpekty.

Tropical rains hit northern Australia.

Tropical cyclones seem to be developing to the north of Australia, and at Coen and Gove Airport some very heavy rainfall has been measured. Coen has seen 124mm since 2300 GMT on the 1st, whilst Gove Airport noted 68mm in just 6 hours, up to 1100 GMT Thursday. These are quite wet locations though, the averages usually 280 to 290mm for the month.

Hot in Guinea.

In the town of Boke, Guinea the temperature on Wednesday reached 40 degrees, 7 degrees above average. The average maximum temperature is usually 33 degrees. Boke lies on the Rio Nunez in western Guinea.

Not so lovely Limnos.

A combination of snow and rain has hit the island of Limnos in Greece. In the rain and snow the temperature dropped to just 1.4 degrees by midday GMT on Wednesday, 11 degrees below average. The average maximum is usually 12 Celsius, with the average minimum usually 5.5 degrees.
