Section 208, Privacy Provisions of the E-Government Act of 2002

Section 208, Privacy Provisions of the E-Government Act of 2002 requires agencies to meet specific requirements.The purpose of this section is to ensure sufficient protections are in place for the privacy of personal information as agencies implement citizen-centered electronic Government.

Privacy Impact Assessments

  • The public is aware of the information we collect about them;
  • Any impact these systems have on personal privacy is adequately addressed;
  • Only personal information necessary to administer our programs is collected, and no more;
  • Adequate system safeguards are in place to protect the personal privacy of individuals in accordance with Department of State standards.

In addition, PIAs confirm that we use the information for the purpose intended; that the information remains timely, relevant, accurate and complete; and, that it is protected while we have it and that we maintain it only as long as we need it.
