Three Gorges area is rich in various oranges since ancient time. The famous poet Qu Yuan in 2,000 years ago had a long poem about the Oranges, Ode to Oranges.

Guanggan is one of the best kinds of Chinese oranges. Those from the Three Gorges region are highly productive and have many varieties.

Generally speaking, the best varieties of guanggan are bright in color, fragrant, tasty, sweet, juicy, and slightly sour. The following varieties sell well both at home and abroad:

Sweet orange- Rich in sugar content, juicy, delicious, available throughout the Three Gorges region and most productive.

Peach-leaf orange - So named because of its shape resembling a peach leaf. Having a ring-like mark on top; and rich in sugar content.

Goose-egg orange - So named because of its shape resembling a goose egg. Rich in citric acid; slightly sour; and bigger and likely to stay fresh longer than other varieties.

Navel-shaped orange - With a depressed base; bigger and smoother than other varieties; stoneless, tender and mellow in taste; and easy to peel and segment. Much sought after on home and world markets.

Summer orange - So named because harvested early in summer. Oval in shape; and readily marketable in hot summer when no other varieties are available.

According to This Webmaster's experiences, comparing with the oranges produced in Florida and California, the oranges in the Three Gorges are smaller, have a thinner but more indomitable skin, with strong fragrant scent. Most are seedless. They are also strong in causing an excessive internal heat if you eat much. But they are not as juicy as those in Florida and California.
