Thursday, September 2 championship game: In a relatively low-scoring game, the Colorado Fossils held off the North Stars 6-3 to win the first annual Denver Over 60 Baseball League Championship. See pictures below taken at the field and at Jack Wilhite's airport hangar reception. Also, all league players have been invited by the Colorado Over 50 Baseball League to attend the annual combined league banquet. Details will follow. Lastly, the Colorado Fossils will represent the Denver League in the Over 60 Baseball National Fun Tournament in Las Vegas.
Thursday, August 26 semi-final playoff game: The North Stars spotted the Bears an early 5-1 lead mostly on the strength of a Bob Heid grand slam home run. Then, the North Stars scored 3 consecutive 5-run innings to take control of the game and won by the score of 21-9. The North Stars have now earned the opportunity to face the Fossils for the league championship on Thursday, September 2nd at 9:30 AM.
Please note that immediately after the championship game, Bears player Jack Wilhite (76 years young) is inviting everyone in the league to visit the Jefferson County Airport, where there will be refreshments provided, and for your viewing pleasure, a substantial collection of very unique aircraft will be on display, including Jack's Mig 17 Russian jet fighter.
Tuesday, August 24: Another great game! In what turned out to be an incredible last inning comeback, the North Stars snatched victory from the jaws of defeat by upending the Bears 17-15 in an officially approved extra-inning game. Down 15-7, and by virtue of a newly-implemented rule which allows the team behind by more than 5 runs to score as many runs as necessary to tie the score, the North Stars came up with 8 runs in the bottom of the sixth inning as game time expired. Since both teams agreed to break the tie, one extra inning was played. After the Bears did not score in the top of the extra inning, Marty Stenzel did it again by belting a 2-run walk-off homer to end it. In addition, Jack Wilhite (76 year old birthday boy) provided earlier fireworks, when he "buzzed" the field in his Mig 17 and then joined the game in the last inning. With the playoffs looming just 2 days later and a repeat of the same 2 teams involved, could it get any more exciting than this?
Thursday, August 12th: Denver Over 60 Baseball is known for its exciting baseball, and today's game was no exception. In another see-saw contest, the North Stars upended the undefeated Fossils by the score of 10-7. Marty Stenzel put the North Stars ahead to stay with a 2-run home run in the top of the last inning. As a result of the game, the North Stars could tie the Fossils if they defeat the Bears in the final game of the regular season next week (August 19th). However, even if the North Stars tie the Fossils with the same win/loss record, the Fossils will win the division title by virtue of the fact that in head-to-head competition with the North Stars, the Fossils have a better runs-allowed record. According to the 2004 NABA Manager's Rulebook and Guidelines (page 22, Tiebreaker System, two teams, item #2), the Fossils cannot be overtaken by the North Stars. This rule was modified by the NABA for the 2004 season. The North Stars would have had to beat the Fossils by at least 9 runs to hold the tie-breaking advantage over them. Although next week's final regular season game between the Bears and the North Stars has no bearing on the standings whatsoever, it will be a preview of the semi-final game that will be played the following week. Will the Bears "get off the shnide?"
Thursday, July 29th: In what was one of the greatest games ever played at Rebels Field, the North Stars held off the Bears for a super-close 5-4 win. Although the total score was quite low, there were four lead changes in what was a very well-played game. It took a 2-run home run in the top of the last inning by Dave Blakley and an outstanding diving catch in the outfield by Steve Coble in the bottom of the last inning to sew up the win.
DENVER OVER 60 BASEBALL TRIVIA QUESTION
Hank Aaron hit his 715th career home run in Atlanta's Fulton County Stadium on April 8, 1974 and passed Babe Ruth as the all-time home run king. Brave's relief pitcher Tom House caught the ball in the bullpen and delivered it personally to Hank moments later.
