Master of Arts in Teaching - Summer

For working teachers who want to take their practice to the next level but have commitments that preclude academic year study, SIT offers a two-summer graduate program. Students in SIT's Summer Master of Arts in Teaching (Summer MAT) program master skills in experiential, learner-centered methodologies, increasing their effectiveness as language teachers and furthering their development as reflective practitioners. Participants become part of a supportive community of professionals, returning to their workplaces with individualized classroom strategies, improved competencies, and a renewed commitment to the field.

The program is specifically designed to meet the needs of working English teachers. Practitioners from around the world study on the SIT campus for two intensive eight-week sessions in consecutive summers, returning in the interim year to their job sites, where they apply what they have learned on campus. Online and on-site faculty mentoring during the interim year teaching practicum offers an excellent one-on-one opportunity for further refinement of teaching skills.

The Summer MAT program emphasizes reflection, observation, self-evaluation, experiential learning, and skill development within a learning community. Students draw on insights gained through their professional practice, as well as their language learning and intercultural experiences, as they share challenges, master teaching methodologies, and examine the commonalities inherent in teaching and learning. The curriculum emphasizes the process of teaching and learning through a combination of lectures, structured discussions, group work, and experience-based exercises. Graduates emerge with a deeper understanding of the teaching process in addition to proven individualized classroom strategies.
