World Summit on Sustainable Development,
Johannesburg Summit
Aug 26 - Sep 4, 2002

Domestic and international preparations have begun for the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) to be held in Johannesburg, South Africa, August 26 - September 4, 2002. The WSSD is the 10-year anniversary celebration of the 1992 United Nations Conference on Environment and Development "Earth Summit" held in Rio de Janiero; consequently, it is often called "Rio +10." The Summit will be a meeting of national governments, civil society organizations, international organizations, and others to discuss global changes since the Earth Summit was held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in 1992, and determine how to move forward. It is anticipated that most member countries of the United Nations will participate at the Head of State level; 50,000 people are expected to attend.
