While there is no diminishing the tragedy that has hit the whole Indian Ocean region following last Sunday's earthquake and Tsunami – we at Jiva Resort & Spa offer our heartfelt condolences to everyone who has suffered.

Even here, in Phuket, amidst all devastation it is very difficult to comprehend the unimaginary.

Now, almost a week later, everyone has worked together to help with disaster relief and with the clean-up. The Thai spirit of extra-ordinary service and friendly willing assistance is evident everywhere.

It is this attitude that makes Thailand such a great holiday destination. Many travel associations and industry experts are now turning their attention to the longer term economic problems that will arise.

Thousands upon thousands of Thai nationals earn their living from tourism. Once the immediate impact is over, survivors face not only the grief of their losses, but many will face unemployment with no income to sustain their families.

Jiva Resort & Spa is 100% in operation and never had any material destruction from the Tsunami.

The effects of the tsunami were very localized. Some Phuket beaches were virtually untouched, whilst damage at others was often concentrated in specific areas

Kata Beach, together with Kata Noi and Karon Beach are restored and all debris is removed.

Efforts are being made to help the local sun bed vendors to buy new equipment in order to facilitate their way back to an income.

We are actively encouraging visitors not to cancel reservations. Most hotels and resorts are operating normally and almost all restaurants are open for business as usual.

Many tourists who escaped injury or loss, and whose accommodation remains intact, have decided to stay on .

As each day passes more and more can be seen swimming, sunbathing, dining out, drinking and making the most of the rest of their holiday. Yet cancellations are on the horizon. Cancellations of the tourism income that local families desperately need to begin rebuilding their lives and their businesses. While it is understandable that some may prefer not to continue with their holiday plans in Thailand, on behalf of all those who derive their livelihood from tourism, we ask you to pause for thought...
