Some
of the TOP Hotels in Bali
Bali's
most famous and crowded resort is Kuta beach, a six-kilometre
sweep of golden sand, with plenty of accommodation,
shops and nightlife. Nearby Sanur is much quieter, but
most backpackers prefer the beaches of peaceful east-coast
Candi Dasa and traveller-oriented Lovina on the north
coast. The island's other major destination is the cultural
centre of Ubud , a still charming but undeniably commercialized
overgrown village, where traditional dances are staged
every night of the week and the streets are full of
arts-and-crafts galleries.

Hire carriers at central highland villages such as Tiom
and Ilaga. For the longer treks you might need 20 or
more. Bear in mind, the difference between you and them
is immense. They are naked, build and eat only what
they need, speak a different language, walk differently,
even urinate differently. You are pink-skinned, dressed
up in clothes, your equipment comes out of packs and
your food out of tins. Use matches, steel axeheads,
salt, razors, raincoats, mirrors, watches, whetstones,
palmfulls of colored beads, and 100 rupiah notes plus
the cost of their food as payment. A headman for the
party, acting as arbitrator and guide, should be paid
extra. Always remember the payback system'; whatever
is given to you, you must give something in return-
a steel axe head for a pig, some beads for a service,
etc. Don't ever overpay or you'll bring about a devaluation
and play havoc with the local economy. You'll find it
could be difficult to get porters for mountain trekking
because they're afraid of leaving their own village
and immediate surroundings. It's often taboo for them
to climb a mountain, believing that it will fall down
and crush them; it's also the forbidder home of ancestors.
Never force carriers to walk later than they think because
this could cause disturbances and desertion as well
as over-exposure to all if caught in heavy cold rain.
Mountain Irianese know best where good shelter and plentiful
firewood can be found. They can build huts from tree
trunks and branches within minutes and !fight tires
without matches in complete darkness with soaking wet
wood. Irianese are proud people, not servants. They
won't wait on you hand and foot. A contract is made
at the start for them to carry so much for so long to
such and such a place for an agreed pay ment and that's
that. Small boys and young men will fetch water, light
fires, cook breakfast. erect tents, but not the older
men river-crossings: Irianese cross rivers by throwing
rocks in them to make better footholds in the strong
currents. They get across larger rivers by simply cutting
down trees and letting them crash over them. With an
axe as the only tool they can build a crazily constructed
bridge out of rattan and branches in only 30 minutes
strong enough to hol+ 20 people on it at once. Sometimes
a bridge is just a single strand of rattan with two
strands somewhat higher to serve as hand ropes. For
suspension bridges an arrow shoots the first Dana fibre
across, then more lines are hauled across until rivers
up to 60 m wide are spanned. A high scaffold is first
mounted like on a high diving board. Swaying violently,
the middle of the bridge almost touches the river. Then
it's like climbing up a mountain.
