Some
of the TOP Hotels in Bali
Bali's
most famous and crowded resort is Kuta beach, a six-kilometre
sweep of golden sand, with plenty of accommodation,
shops and nightlife. Nearby Sanur is much quieter, but
most backpackers prefer the beaches of peaceful east-coast
Candi Dasa and traveller-oriented Lovina on the north
coast. The island's other major destination is the cultural
centre of Ubud , a still charming but undeniably commercialized
overgrown village, where traditional dances are staged
every night of the week and the streets are full of
arts-and-crafts galleries.

Tourism preserves and develops Dani carfts and also
serves to introduce a cash economy to the people. Danis
are enthusiastic craftsmen, designers of tools and dwellings,
also of shells, feathers and other organic articles
for self-adornment and for sale. Men in this society
are the creators, women are the producers. Powerful
warriors who killed in battle sit for hours making skirts
or delicate orchid fibre necklaces for their wives.
Bone awls and needles are used for weaving. Spiders
are harvested in the forest, their elaborate webs hung
around the throat in unique woven patterns (rarely found).
Purchase stone axe blades (kapak) in Wamena for Rp500-2000,
the price depending upon the size and the labor involved
in making it. Black stone is the hardest and considered
the finest. Although these axes cost up to Rp75,000
on Java, they are much too expensive in the Wamena market.
Wait instead for Dani men to approach you, which they
do often. Look for sekan (or tetngen), thin rattan handwoven
bracelets that take 1-2 hours to make and cost Rp100
in outlying villages. Noken (bark string bags) are cheapest
(Rp500) at the village of Wesa Put right behind the
airport in the small workshop on the right just before
the village. Ask for Daniel. The only way to make sure
that you're buying a true bark string bag is to buy
a grimy sweat-soaked one from a passing Dani woman.
At Negara Hotel Restoran John S. Wolff sells handicrafts
and implements such as tomohawks, axes, bows and arrows,
hats, grass skirts (yungal or yokel) and noken. If you
go out to the villages these same articles are considerably
cheaper. To send artifacts back from Wamena do it through
MAF or the Protestant air service. They get your stuff
back safely to Australia by air freight
