Overview of the Bachelor of General Studies degree program

    At ETSU, 40 percent of our students are over the age of 23, and that number is expected to increase.  Many working adults have 1 or 2 years of previous college credit and need a program specifically designed to show them how to complete their undergraduate degree.  The Bachelor of General Studies (BGS) program provides adults an alternative to traditional degree programs.  The BGS program enables students to design a curriculum that meets individual and professional needs and interests not served by singular majors.  Due to its flexible nature, the program appeals to students who have the ability to work more independently than is required in traditional degree programs.

     Individualized learning plans and advisement sessions are hallmarks of the Bachelor of General Studies experience.  BGS students are assigned an advisor who supports them throughout their course of study to reach the goal of earning their bachelor’s degree.

    Your Individual Learning Plan is the written summary you and your BGS advisor develop to chart the courses you need to take to meet ETSU requirements and your personal course selections.  Your previous college credit is applied and you are given a copy of this written summary for future reference.  You may meet with your advisor at ETSU campuses in Johnson City, Bristol, Kingsport, or Greeneville, over the telephone, or by e-mail.
