Former NHRA Funny Car champion Cruz Pedregon was in familiar colors, those of his title sponsor Advance Auto Parts, but he wasn't in familiar surroundings as he traded in his 7,000-horsepower Funny Car for a dirt-throwing sprint car. In the end it didn't seem to matter as the Southern California resident looked very comfortable racing in the 13th annual Chili Bowl Midget Nationals at Tulsa Expo Raceway in Oklahoma. Pedregon, who usually pilots a Monte Carlo Funny Car on the POWERade Drag Racing Series, had a successful first weekend of midget competition in the No. 71C Advance Auto Parts entry, advancing one race on the strength of a second-place finish.
