What does the EMU WAP Package do?
The EMU WAP Package lets users access existing email accounts via wireless
phones and other WAP devices. It also provides a toolkit for expanding and
customizing your wireless strategy.
Who
is the EMU WAP Package for?
The EMU WAP Package is intended for organizations that want to provide wireless
access to existing email accounts through a customizable and brandable interface.
The EMU WAP Package will appeal to companies wishing to jumpstart their wireless
strategy with cutting-edge, off-the-shelf technology.
Why should I use the EMU WAP Package?
The EMU WAP Package offers users the convenience and flexibility of checking
and sending email from any place a phone can be carried. If you and your users
want the freedom to use email anywhere, anytime, without having to find a
networked computer, the EMU WAP Package is for you. And if you are looking
for tools to enhance your existing wireless strategy, the EMU WAP Package
offers unlimited possibilities.
How does the EMU WAP Package differ from other products?
Unlike many WAP email services, the EMU WAP Package runs on your own server.
When you buy the package, you gain the ability to customize the user interface.
You can place your own logo on the login page, add new features according
to your users' needs, and optimize the design for your particular fleet of
WAP devices. Furthermore, the EMU WAP Package provides access to any existing
email account. Users do not need to create new email accounts specifically
for wireless use.
What do I need to use the EMU WAP Package?
To use the EMU WAP Package, you must meet the system requirements for EMU
Webmail. (See the EMU website for further information.) You also need a WAP
phone equipped with a browser that reads WML 1.1. EMU recommends UP.Browser
version 3.1 or higher, although any WML 1.1 browser will suffice.
What
is WAP?
WAP stands for Wireless Application Protocol. WAP is a standard by which internet
contents are served to wireless devices. (See http://www.wapforum.org for
further information.)
What is WML?
WML stands for Wireless Markup Language. WML is interpreted by a browser that
runs on a WAP device. WML is to the wireless browser what HTML is to a normal
web browser like Netscape Navigator.
What happens when I check an email account using the EMU WAP Package?
Your phone contacts a WAP gateway, which serves as a link between the wireless
world and the web. The WAP gateway then contacts the web server at your EMU
site. The server processes the request, invoking a series of web applications,
and responding with one of the WML decks in the EMU WAP Package. The gateway
receives this WML and sends a tokenized version of it to your phone, where
the browser reads and displays it.
How does the EMU WAP Package differ from normal EMU Webmail?
The EMU WAP Package is designed specifically for wireless use. When you use
normal EMU Webmail, your web browser contacts the server directly and receives
standard HTML responses. Browsers on WAP phones cannot process HTML, however.
When you use the EMU WAP Package, your wireless browser first contacts a WAP
gateway, which in turn contacts the email server. Instead of responding with
HTML, the server sends wireless-optimized WML content from the EMU WAP Package.
What
does the EMU WAP Package contain?
The EMU WAP Package includes an installation of the latest, fine-tuned release
of EMU's popular email access system. The EMU WAP Package also contains a
set of WML files that form a brandable, customizable interface to the EMU
system. These WML files serve a similar purpose to the HTML pages in a web-based
installation of the EMU system, except they can be read by WAP devices.
What functions does the EMU WAP Package support?
The EMU WAP package allows users to:
Retrieve email from an existing POP3 or IMAP email account.
View a message in any one of
three folders: INBOX, SAVED, SENT.
Reply to a message.
Write a new message.
Save a message to the SAVED folder.
Delete a message from any folder.
Change signature, name, and email address.
Receive MIME-encoded messages.
How secure
is the EMU WAP Package? All transmissions between a WAP phone and a WAP gateway
are encrypted using the WTLS standard. If the EMU WAP Package is run on a
secure web server, transmissions between the WAP gateway and the server are
encrypted using the SSL standard. (This standard is used when you submit credit
card data online, for example.) The combination of WTLS and SSL offers a high
level of security for data in transit.
How does the EMU WAP Package look?
One of the advantages of the EMU WAP Package is that you can brand and customize
the user interface as you see fit. The appearance of the interface depends
on the design choices you make, and also on the phones and browsers you use.
The package comes with a wireless-optimized interface to get you started.
You may wish to preserve most of this interface, changing only the logo, or
you may wish to modify it according to your specific needs.
