SAILING & BOAT CHARTERS
Most companies offering Moorea as a sailing or boat charter destination operate and board out of Papeete, Tahiti or Moorea. Typical tours involve cruising around the island's beautiful lagoon for a relaxing afternoon while snorkeling, scuba diving, picture taking, or swimming and picnicking on one of the nearby motus. MARINAS, HARBORS, & ANCHORAGE
Surprisingly, the island of Moorea has only one marina and just a few places to anchor your boat easily for more than a minimum stay. The likely reason for this is it's close proximity to Tahiti and all her boat and yachting services. If your boat needs repairs or parts, it's only across the way to Papeete to the best selection of services, parts, boatyards, etc.
Here, TST offers what information we have at the moment relating to Marinas and harbours on Moorea. Note that the
future of this page will offer more accurate details on these subjects, but for now known information is as follows:

Marina
The sole marina on Moorea is called the MARINA DE VAIARE and it's located on the eastern side of the island, near the town of Vaiare.

MARINA DE VAIARE
PO. Box 366-98 728, Maharepa- MOOREA,
Contact: Mr. Rocky POROI, Telephone/ fax- (689)56.26.97
Pier with pontoon for sailing and deep sea fishing boats up to 60' long. Limited space available. Basic facilities include: water, electricity, toilets, and a small parts store.

Harbours/ Anchoring, & Mooreage

There is no public harbour to speak of, other than the one at the Marina De Vaiare, (listed above), and it's rather small with limited space for extended stays.

As for anchoring your boat, there seems to be many places to do so for short stays, but limited places for extended stays. Many boats end up anchoring for overnighters or short stays in Opunohu or Cooks bays because of the beautiful scenery and gentile waters, but you will also see yachts at random points within the lagoon. At this time, TST is unaware of the situation for actual Moorings useable for non-private vessels, but we'll post the info as soon as we can get it.

BUSINESS & SERVICES
Moorea has a limited selection of professional yachting or boating businesses and services for the same reasons it has only one marina. (see above).
Water fillups, electricity hookups, toilets, and a very basic parts store can be found at the Marina De Vaiare. (listed above), but not much else. THE BEST SELECTION OF YACHTING & BOATING SERVICES CAN BE FOUND IN PAPEETE, TAHITI.

CHARTSCheck this chart out now!
There are many places to buy current, up to date charts for Moorea and surrounding Polynesian islands, and any sailor worth his salt knows that having up to date charts is always well worth the investment. Unfortunately, finding good charts for use on the internet is not an easy process...
So far, TST has only aquired one nautical chart (slightly out of date, yet good quality) for useage on any of our sailing pages and it is for the Leeward Islands of the Society Island Archipelago.
Of course, Moorea is a Windward island, so it won't really help you with this area much except as a general point of interest.

Here are two places we know of to purchase charts for Moorea and the area:

YACHTWORLD.COM
Online yachting superstore.
Boats for sale, boats for charter, boating yellow pages, charts, discussion forums, news and weather, finance and insurance.

WEATHER
TST is discovering the boater's and yachtsmen's most popular choices for dependable and accurate online weather forecasting for sailing and boating in the Polynesian islands.

For French speaking sailors and yachtsmen:
CYCLONE.PF (website in french)

For English speaking sailors and yachstmen: UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII, DEPARTMENT OF METEOROLOGY

Note: If any sailors or yachtsmen out there have more or better weather related links, please tell us about them!
