Reference is a category for sites devoted to the study of and access to information itself - teaching it (Education), using it (Knowledge Management), storing it (Libraries, Museums) - or sites containing information on topics varied and comprehensive enough that they could not be classified under the other top level Open Directory categories (Dictionaries, Directories, Encyclopedias).
Collection of useful information, sometimes with celestial information or a calendar.

Sites that will NOT be accepted:
1) Sites that do not answer questions over the Internet. 2) Sites answering questions with a search engine or a well-programmed computer. 3) Sites that answer questions for a fee. Answers for a fee would be a business and those sites should probably be in a business category or perhaps Reference/Education/Services_For_Hire/ or one of its subcategories. 4) Sites with questions answered by only one person. Everyone is an expert on SOMETHING. This DOES NOT mean that your web site qualifies to be in this category. For example, if you submit your plumbing business web site under the guise of "We're the plumbing experts!", it will be deleted and possibly marked as a category spammer. You don't want that. So what IS permitted here? Sites that allow experts to sign up and answer questions. Some examples would be AllExperts.com and AskMe.com. We ONLY want web sites where you can submit questions to a pool of experts and have them supply an answer. Sites like "Joe the Car Expert" would NOT be accepted. Do not submit them. Asking an expert means asking a HUMAN a question, not a search engine or a well-programmed computer.Second, this category is for FREE answers to questions which can be asked and answered over the Internet. Answers for a fee would be a business and those sites should probably be in a business category or perhaps Reference/Education/Services_For_Hire/ or one of its subcategories.
Third, there is a fine line between sites which give advice and those which provide 'ask an expert' services. Society/Advice may be the more appropriate place for a submission, and sometimes it will be moved over there rather than be posted in this category.
Fourth, everyone is an expert on SOMETHING. This DOES NOT mean that your web site qualifies to be in this category. Directories that deal specifically with a city, state, country, or other geographic area, should be found at the regional level for that geographic category. A directory is a guide or list of resources, not an individual business. The directories in this category are mainly telephone, email and manufacturers directories.
Before you ask the editors to create a new subcategory please take the time to look around.
TIP: Go to the search engine and type in a few keywords that relate to your site. The search results will serve up listings of different categories. Go to those categories and see if one of them is right for you. You may have to do a few searches using different keywords that relate to your site.
Also, it is possible your site could more appropriately be placed under some other top level directory category such as Science or Society.

It should be noted that the top level categories that are listed are very broad and also contain second, third, and sometimes fourth, fifth, and more levels of categories that may relate more closely to what you need for your listing. Make sure you have dug down deeply enough in the directory structure before you make a suggestion.
