Spend a Day in the Park

Balboa Park is a wonderful place for families to spend time together. Explore art treasures from around the globe, fossils from near and far and exotic animals. Experience interactive fun with science. See sports memorabilia, world folk art, rare aircraft, ancient mummies, unique photographic art and model trains. Enjoy plays, dance, puppet shows and music. Hike Florida Canyon's trails, visit the Carnivorous Plant Bog in the Botanical Building and watch the sparkling water dance in the many fountains in the Park.

Little Known Facts

Balboa Park is full of surprising secrets, little known facts and tantalizing tidbits of information. Odds are somewhere in the Park there’s a largest, a smallest, an oldest or any one of a variety of strange and one-of-a-kind mysteries.

● Did you know that the massive Moreton Bay Fig, near the Natural History Museum shares the state championship for the largest tree in the state? On record with the California Department of Forestry, our tree has a trunk girth of 486 inches, a height of 78 feet and a crown width of 123 feet.

● Did you know that the world’s first IMAX® Dome Theater opened at the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center? The second IMAX® projector ever built (in 1973) is still in use there today.

● The largest permanent model railroad in North America is at the San Diego Model Railroad Museum. With over 24,000 square feet of exhibit space, the museum has 115 scale miles of track or 1¼ actual miles.

● Did you know that when the Botanical Building re-lathed was it took nearly 12 miles or 70,000 lineal feet of redwood lath?
