Now & Then tells the story of Appalachia, the mountain region that extends from northern Mississippi to southern New York state. The magazine presents a fresh, revealing picture of life in Appalachia, past and present, with engaging articles, personal essays, fiction, poetry, and photography.

Now & Then, the Appalachian Magazine is back. Beginning with the Spring 2005 issue, Now & Then will be published twice per year. Now & Then will be available on a subscription basis for $15 per year. Subscribers are also encouraged to become members of the Center for Appalachian Studies and Services.

Now & Then’s 2005 themes will coincide with events that continue the celebration of the Ccenter’s 20th Anniversary year—a media symposium in April and an exhibit on stock car racing in August at the Reece Museum. A New Look at the Media and Appalachia will be released to coincide with a media symposium at ETSU April 14-15 designed to focus attention on the coverage of contemporary media issues and Appalachia. The Summer 2005 Now & Then will focus on Stock Car Racing in Appalachia and be released in conjunction with the exhibit at the Reece Museum on the early history of the Bristol Motor Speedway, and with the speedway’s 2005 NASCAR Sharpie 500 race. For more information visit our Themes page.

The current issue

Now & Then, a tribute to 20 years includes the 2003 Fiction Competition winners as well as articles about a variety of subjects pertaining to life in Appalachia. Without a specific theme this time around, I asked many of our frequent contributors to send something in that they were working on or that they wanted to share with our readers. I got a good selection of articles, essays, and a short story—from a modern take on the Jenny Wiley legend by Eddie Pendarvis to an essay on what highways mean to Anwar Accawi. Parks Lanier sent in an article on the lack of an Appalachian aesthetic and Cathy Lentes a gentle essay about why she lives in Appalachian Ohio. Nine of our regulars responded to my request. Linda Marion had already chosen poetry for the proposed upcoming two issues of the magazine, and they are all included. There is also a retrospective section about the magazine and about the Center for Appalachian Studies and Services, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year. Twenty years. As former Now & Then editor Pat Arnow says in her retrospective article, “It’s not enough.” So we will go on. See where we are going by looking at upcoming themes.
