Sub-Saharan Africa faces more challenges than any other region in meeting goals derived from the International Conference on Population and Development in 1994 (ICPD) and 1999 (ICPD+5). For that reason, the region receives the largest share of UNFPA support.

The Fund's ongoing efforts to promote reproductive health in the region have been undercut by the devastating HIV/AIDS epidemic and by massive human displacements in the wake of natural and human disasters. Preventing the further spread of HIV/AIDS, and addressing the related issue of adolescent reproductive health, are key priorities for UNFPA. more..
