Posted: Janaury 26, 2005 at 5:23 p.m. (BCN) -- The driver of a pickup truck plowed through the front doors of a Castro Valley Rite Aid this afternoon, narrowly missing cashiers and shoppers, a spokesman for the Alameda County Fire Department said today.
"Surprisingly enough, he hit nobody," Chief Dave Rocha said today.
He did hit six aisles of merchandise after he plunged approximately 75 to 100 feet into the store and made a sharp 150-degree turn, Rocha said.
The driver was conscious when medics arrived at the scene and transported him to Eden Medical Center. He told authorities that prior to the crash, he was suffering from some type of medical problem, Rocha said.
A frightened shopper was also transported to the hospital. She was not hit by the car or debris but was having a hard time breathing, Rocha said.
Employees of the store, located at 3848 Castro Valley Blvd., were evacuated into the parking lot after the 2:40 p.m. crash, according to the fire department.
The pickup truck did not hit any of the building's support columns and the store did not suffer any structural damage, Rocha said.
The California Highway Patrol will investigate the incident, Rocha said.
