Welcome to East Tennessee State University. The Office of Human Resources provides a comprehensive new employee orientation presentation.
On August 1, 2003, the Office of Human Resources began conducting a three-phase new employee orientation program. This new program is mandatory for all regular full-time and part-time employees, and will be offered on or near the first and sixteenth of each month.
Phase 1 provides an overview of the university’s benefits programs and services. Employees are given an opportunity to ask questions regarding employment and benefits, and complete necessary paperwork to ensure proper benefits and inclusion on the payroll. The benefits orientation will include but not be limited to the discussion of state and optional insurance and benefit programs, retirement options, worker’s compensation program, transcripts, and payroll information.
In Phase 2 of the orientation, the office of Human Resources provides an overview to the university and to key university policies, procedures and services. Top administrators, department heads and supervisors are involved in the process of welcoming and orientating new employees to the university. The orientation familiarizes employees with the university and its vision, mission, values, organizational structure and culture. The university orientation will include but not be limited to the discussion of: university history, structure and mission, essential personnel policies and procedures, performance evaluations, ID services, campus health and safety, computer use, library services, general campus services for employees, employee training and development, purchasing, travel and budgetary guidelines, and a campus tour.
Phase 3 of orientation will be initiated throughout campus during the next year. Phase 3 will be a departmental/job orientation checklist. This checklist is to be completed by the new employee’s immediate supervisor and returned to the office of Human Resources within one month of employment. The checklist provides the supervisor and the employee with guidelines for the discussion of departmental policies and procedures. The department orientation will include a tour of the work area and an explanation of employee’s responsibilities and working conditions.
