Drop-in Webmail
EMU Webmail is a web application that acts as a gateway between your web server and email
sub systems. By utilizing the Internet standards for email, EMU Webmail is able to be instantly
compatible with virtually all POP and IMAP mail servers, providing a "drop in" webmail solution.
Designed to suppliment an existing email environment, EMU Webmail requires no changes to your
current standards-based email system--it's just as if another email client were added.
Users connect to the EMU Webmail engine via a web browser--like Netscape Navigator or Microsoft
Internet Explorer. EMU Webmail then comminicates with the email system via the POP, IMAP, or SMTP
protocols, retrieving any email data or sending an email message as appropriate. The webmail engine
then creates an HTML response that it sends back to the client.
Webmail Clusters
EMU Webmail can reside on the same server as your web server, or on a dedicated machine. If you
need to provide for user capacities of more than 50,000 you can add more than one EMU Webmail
server to distribute the load into a webmail cluster.
Webmail clusters consist of two or more machines that are running the EMU Webmail software. Typically,
all machines have access to a shared data source where the EMU data is stored, allowing a webmail
user to flip-flop between any of the machines on the cluster and maintain a consistent
application usage. A load balancer may be placed above the cluster, to accurately distribute load
and provide failover capabilities. Alternatively you can employ round-robin DNS to spread
users throughout the cluster.
