I would like to thank everyone for the huge amount of information that I got from the multiple Las Vegas message boards. I would especially like to thank VegasHost (Bill Le) for his help and info. I was not able to drag my wife or the two other couples to the couple bars that he got us access to but he went out of his way to help our trip. He may specialize in clubs but he was able to get us the casino rate at the Tropicana and this saved us $20-$40 a couple. He is a legitimate Junket host and everyone should try him out. Ok, now on to my long trip report. Remember you have been warned!!

Day One – Trip to Vegas

Took Continental out of Cleveland and got into LV a few minutes early. Good flight with a free movie thanks to online check-in coupons. Bags came quickly and very little wait to Dollar shuttle. Signed up for fastlane but was not on list and had to go inside. (Of course this was not what I wanted since I used the CTI code) Hopped in front of long line of people and got upgraded to fullsize since I had to wait. Attendant commented on my $15 dollars off and the great total rate of $12 but did not change the charges. I picked a SUV with leather interior over the abundant PC cruisers and we were on our way.

I reserved one night at the Plaza since they had good rate for Saturday arrival and had I no problem getting downtown. Room at the Plaza was available but had no view – which was fine for our lone night downtown. The room was clean and did have a slight cleaning smell to it but nothing gross. I would definitely recommend this hotel for a place to sleep. Got pizza in the deli, and tried my one ½ pound hot dog of the trip, with a 6-pack at ABC store and had lunch in room. Wife took nap and I went and lost $40 at the table in the Plaza and LVC. Not good start since we only budget $400 for the entire trip. Very low rollers!!

Had dinner at the Main Street Station buffet and enjoyed it. The food was fresh with plenty of different types of food. The ribs and Chinese items were my favorite but there was too much to list. A piece of coconut cream pie finished a good meal. The total meal cost $25 for both of us and the only drawback was the 45-60 minute wait on a Saturday night. Oh well, I am sure we would have waited anywhere. (more…)

First, thank you all for all of the great advice you gave me before my trip. As you will see by this post, I put a great lot of it to use. This is going to be real boring if you are a hard core gambler, cause we are not!!

After 3 hours of sleep (argh!!) we left on a 5:30 am flight out of Portland ME, through Cincinnati into Las Vegas where we arrived at 10:15, a full 15 minutes early!! Waited 30 minutes for friends to arrive from Hartford and headed to the Mirage. We got there by 12 and both of our rooms were ready. They were nice rooms… a big king bed, with a lovely view of the mountains… once you got by the roof of the casino, the vents from the kitchens and the freeway, but I wasn’t in the room for the view anyway. The bathroom is small, it is nearly impossible for 2 people to be in there at the same time unless one of them is in the shower. All 4 of us were starving so we ate at Cravings, the Mirage buffet (37.90 for 2 people). My pregnant friend says that the pizza there was fantastic, and since that is what she has been living on this trimester, she is as good a critic as you will get. The prime rib was very good, the shrimp were perfect (not the mushy things I’ve had on buffets before) and I have to say that the salad I had prepared for me was the best I ever ate in my life. Now most people don’t get excited by salad, but as the person who does all the cooking here, I really enjoy when someone else does all the cleaning, peeling and chopping for me. They had a balsamic vinegar that I probably would have poured into a wine glass and sipped. (more…)

I got a lot of good info off of this site before my trip so I thought I’d give my own comments for others to use. This was our first trip to Vegas, we are not into gambling, so this report is mainly about the other things to do while in town. This report is long as we tried to see as much as possible and had a week (which is much too long to stay in Vegas).

We flew from Baltimore to Vegas on America West. I know a lot of people complain about this airline, but we had no problems. We were going to Vegas on a Timeshare trade that didn’t start till Sunday, so I had booked a room at the Stratosphere. I knew from this site that it was a long way from the strip but I wanted to go downtown that night so it was a good choice (besides we had a car). Stopped on the way to the hotel to check out Bellagio and eat lunch at the buffet (very good - best buffet in town next to Paris). Bellagio is a real nice place (but too rich for my blood). (more…)

A Grand Canyon Tour: There’s been plenty of “Top Ten Places You Must See Before You Die” lists written over the years, and I think The Grand Canyon has been in pretty much every one of them. Reviewing such an awesome natural monument is almost impossible, but I’ll do my humble best?

I visited the Grand Canyon in January 2002 ? a group of four young guys on their first trip to America. We drove from Los Angeles up to Las Vegas (couldn’t stand either of those cities personally, but then I might have liked LA more if I’d had a chance to see more of it), stayed in a Travel Lodge for just $30 for the night ($7.5 per person wasn’t bad even if the “breakfast” they gave you in the price was a stale cookie and carton of stale orange juice!), and got a trip to the Grand Canyon for about $150 (can’t remember the exact price). This trip included being picked up in the morning by coach and taken to the aerodrome, flying in to the Grand Canyon in a 10-seater Cessna, a buffet lunch near a Native Indian reservation, and the return journey ? about 6 hours in total. (Also on offer was a helicopter trip, which I think was about $200 ? this didn’t offer the lunch etc and lasted about 4 hours in total, but it did take you right into the GC, so if I’d had the money I would have liked to do both trips.) The company that offered these trips was right next to the Travel Lodge, but you wouldn’t be able to walk down the main part of Vegas for very long without being offered a similar package. (more…)

i flew out of england on 19th february heading for orlando where i was visiting my friend before heading on to vegas. after a fantastic stay in the sunshine state where we visited disney world and both the universal theme parks i arrived at orlando airport for my 9.15pm flight with delta on sunday the 22nd of feb only to be told it was cancelled due to rain in vegas.. by the way did i tell you that my flight from england 4 days earlier had to return an hour into the journey because of engine problems and i ended up staying in a manchester hotel for the night and losing 24 hours with my friend in florida. oh well im not going to let that ruin my time in the usa so after spending the night in another hotel i arrive back at mco early monday morning and leave on time for dallas where i am delayed for another 2 hours before finally departing and getting into a wet las vegas around 12.45pm. after a speedy check in at the barbary coast hotel i make my way to room 339 on the 3rd floor only about 20 yards away from the lifts. nice spacious room with 2 queen beds and a view of flamingo hotel and a little of the strip. i will say right away i liked my room very much and i think barbary coast is a great hotel in a great location and at a reasonable price. i had no complaints and would certainly stay here again in the future. anyway im in vegas at last and seeing as i am only here for four and a half days there is no time to lose so after changing and showering its off out to begin the fun. i was to busy this year to write down when and what i did so i will categorize and comment on the things listed below…

food & drink…shows…gambling…tours…thrills…others.

food…i am a simple eater and love buffets so every morning just like last year i eat breakfast at a different hotel and this year they were harrah’s,imperial palace, treasure island and paris, the worse one was without doubt paris where the service was slow in fact i had eaten over half my food before my drinks arrived and the bacon was warm at best not to mention that the credit card facility was not working meaning it took ages to get seated despite the fact it was not exactly over crowded. as for the other 3 well there was little difference in my opinion i liked them all and had no complaints at all though my favorite is still the pharaoh’s pheast at luxor. unlike last year where i had a dinner buffet every evening this year i seemed always to be on the move and in a hurry so i got burger and fries from macs 2 nights and ate as i was walking the strip, one night i ate at the luxor pyramid cafe while waiting to see blueman group and enjoyed a nice thick juicy burger and fries with coke. i also got a hot dog with onions, fries and a coke at the flamingo which was ok and did the job. my first meal in vegas soon after i arrived was at the barbary coast in the victorian room which consisted of a 16oz t.bone steak with fries, onion rings, bread rolls and hot tea which was very tasty and great value at only $14.00 plus tip. being from the uk i am a lager drinker so i was on fosters most my stay apart from a couple of margaritas including a yard of margarita from the luxor which was drunk at the bar and then on the strip as i made my way back to my room.

shows…i saw blueman group at the luxor which was very original and without doubt the loudest event i have ever attended. they did cancel the show i was due to see on the wednesday because of low ticket sales so i saw them the next day and it was more than worth the wait and i even got my photo taken with a blueman..lol. great venue and fun with audience participation. i saw rita rudner at ny ny and she was very funny and put on a great 75 minute show with plenty of topical gags as well as looking beautiful. the venue is to small though and the seats to close together with no stadium seating which she is trying to get the management to alter but apart from that i would recommend seeing her show if you get the chance. i saw momma mia at mandalay bay and being an abba fan of course i loved it and can see why its one of the top shows in vegas at the moment. the venue was spacious and very nice and the show lasted for about 2 hours with a 15 minute interval about half way through. if you like abba even a little you must not miss this. the only afternoon show i saw was bottoms up at the flamingo which was free with the purchase of one drink which was 8 dollars in total and for such a small ammount it was worth spending an hour at the only topless afternoon show in vegas which also contained some very raunchy material and though corny it was quiet funny in places. if your a bit of a prude or easily offended i suggest you miss this show.

gambling…i actually did very little gambling losing roughly 250 bucks at the black jack tables and probably $100.00 on the slots where i played mostly video poker. i can and do gamble in england probably more than i should so when in vegas there are to many things to do apart from sit at a table or slot for hours and hours wasting your holiday time so i limit myself and when i lose a certain ammount i leave and do something else.

tours…i did the helicopter tour of the las vegas strip on my first night and it was a great sight cruising over the strip in my first helicopter ride which was wonderful and so much smoother than i imagined it would be. i also went on a grand canyon tour via helicopter which was simply amazing and a fantastic experience. i had done the plane/bus tour in 2003 but flying over the canyon, lake mead, hoover dam and eventually inside the canyon and landing on the floor is something i will never forget as long as i live. I highly recommend Paradise Found Tours for making the arrangemnets.

thrills…first i did the ny ny co aster 2 times (1 from front) which was quiet good though hardly worth $18.00 for 2 rides. i then moved onto speed the ride at sahara which was good though not as fast i had expected and though its over quiet fast its worth doing specially from the front seat with your eyes open. one ride is $9.00 so get the $12.00 day pass where you can ride as many times as you wish all day long. next it was into the adventuredome at circus circus to get the day pass for $19.95 to ride the coaster canyon blaster which is ok for an indoor coaster. chaos which was something different spinning you around 360 degrees as well as upside down and inside out…a fun ride worth taking the time to do a few times as long as you dont get sick easily..lol also did the rim runner which is very tame apart from a average drop at the end into the water which does leave you soaking wet if your in the front seats. all in all worth the 20 bucks if you can put up with the many kids running around screaming. last stop on my thrill kick was the stratosphere and an all day ticket costing $24.95 allowing you admission to the observation tower as well as unlimited rides on the high roller, big shot and the new ride x.scream. i did the high roller first which is very mild apart from the fact your going around a building over 900 feet above ground at 30 mph which is good fun specially when its windy. next i did the big shot for the first time ever and it was a blast shooting you over 160 feet into the vegas sky at 45 mph and the bit at the end when the ride stops and you leave your seat is quiet a feeling. also the views you see as your feet dangle into thin air are just spectacular and would be hard to better anywhere in the world. lastly i headed for the newest and so i had been told scariest ride in vegas if not america or even the world…lol…x.scream. sitting in one of 8 seats 886 feet above ground level soon the 30 foot metal lever hanging over the side of the tower lowers and shoots you to the end at 30mph and leaves you dangling there for a good few seconds with very little between you and the concrete floor way below. it does this a total of 3 times before one last surprising spurt up and down before taking you back to the safety of the tower. the difference riding the front row 2 seats as against the other 6 is vast simply because in the front seat you have nothing in front of you so the feeling is multiplied and the views if you can open your eyes are brilliant specially after dark when the strip and indeed vegas is lit up in neon. i did the high roller 3 times, the big shot 5 times and x.scream 6 times and though it was a little chilly in the february night i had a great time and cant wait to get back up thee again…so much fun for only $25.00…yipee.

other…riding up to the top of the eifell tower in a glass sided elevator and seeing the views around from 460 up was very nice and the best view of the bellagio fountain show anywhere i would think…cost $12.00 if i recall.

freebies…big elvis (pete vallee) at the barbary coast lounge tue-fri 3pm-6pm was a great show and well worth checking out. the bellagio fountains i never tire of seeing. the flamingo wildlife habitat looked beautiful and is certainly worth spending an hour there. the rio waitresses getting up on the table and dancing at regular intervals is one not to be missed by the men reading this (:-) the mirage vocano is always a nice sight specially when its chilly. the sirens at ti is quiet good as long as you get there early enough to get a good view though i don’t like the fact the british ship always gets sunk…booo. the air show at tropicana each afternoon in the casino is ok if you have not seen it before. tigers at mirage and lions at mgm again ok if you are seeing them for the first time. lots of good lounge acts to see nightly at most of the hotels with cat daddy at ballys highly recommended by my friend. just walking the strip after dark is always a buzz and the hotels themselves are often a work of art and you can spend hours looking around then not to mention hours trying to find your way out of them…lol.

anyway after sampling all of the above and more my time was up and its time to leave this one of a kind town and head back home to reality. i wake at 4.00am and check out before five which only takes a few minutes.i get a taxi to the airport for 12 dollars with tip and eat breakfast at mccarran before taking off on time and head for my first connection in salt lake city. now i must tell you i had booked to change in atlanta originally because as the americans amongst you will know the weather in the states in february specially in the north can get very bad but delta cancelled this flight and sent me to slc instead with only a 35 minute stop before my next connection so to say i was worried would be an understatement. anyway despite snow and only one run way being open i made it with one minute to spare after running like hell from gate c4 to gate d10 though they did have to wait 10 minutes for my baggage to be loaded. after a smooth flight to orlando we landed only a few minutes late and so i had just over 2 hours before my next flight left for england with virgin atlantic. take off on time at 6.30pm and 8 hours or so later we land in manchester and after a couple of hours wait its on the coach for a little over 2 hours journey back to birmingham where my mother and sister pick me up and drive me home arriving at 1.00pm exactly 24 hours and over five and a half thousand miles after i left my hotel in vegas (32 hours minus 8 hour time difference from vegas to england) final thoughts…despite a few transport problems i had a fantastic time in vegas and will be back again in the near future thats a certainty. if you got down this far thanks for reading this shortened report i hope you have as much fun in vegas as i did and will again i’m sure.

As a holiday destination, Las Vegas is in a league of it’s own, everything is built on a huge scale, and growing by the day, (the smog that covers the city is mostly made from all the construction dust).I would strongly recommend Paradise Found’s grand canyon tour by helicopter, we enjoyed a champagne lunch and the whole experience could not be faulted. The luxor was an exeptional place to stay, the internal atrium is amazing, and their attention to detail with the egyptian theme is astonishing, although perhaps in some areas they may have gone a tad overboard. My only real problem with Las Vegas is the over indulgdence, almost every eatery seems to be an “eat as much as you want” buffet, and you could not leave any hotel without first having to wander through the casino, not good for those who struggle to resist temptation. Siegfried and Roy’s secret garden is a must, the tigers are so intelligent, the dolphin show is great too, and make sure you go down town to the golden nugget and enjoy a huge shrimp cocktail for 99c. Also top tip, we went in dec and the weather was ideal, and the town was fairly quiet, new year gets very busy and prices become crazy. Make sure you bring a comfortable pair of shoes as to walk the length of the strip will really take it out of you. Enjoy your trip to Las Vegas, you will never go to a more eccentric place.

This place was like being on different planet. Imagine these huge toy like buildings lit up and placed in the middle of the desert. It made me think that I had landed on Mars as the desert had a red tint to it and Las Vegas itself was surrounded by mountains and canyons.

Just walking down the famous Strip(a major road)was entertainment in itself as some of the sights you can see include a miniture version of Paris, a fairtale castle and a volcano thats shoots fire.

One things that hits you when you arrive is how hot the place is. It was like being in an oven and the heat didn’t seem to get any better at night. Most places are air conditioned though but be sure to wear loads of sun protection as my friend had to resort to buying a cow boy hat as he was getting too burned!
Food was quite cheap as there are plenty of all you can eat buffets for around £7. It tasted fine to begin with but after awhile you just longed for some home cooked food.

One of the unforgettable I things I did while there was to take a day trip to see the Grand Canyon. It included viewing the canyon by small plane and coach with entry into the national park itself. It cost £120 and was one of the most expesive parts of my trip to America but how often do you get an opertunity to see one of the wonders of the world and it was indeed breath taking. What an amazing Grand Canyon Tour.

I only spent a few days in Las Vegas which I think was plenty of time to see the main sights and I must say the whole experience was very memorable.
Viva las vegas….dum de dum dum da

We’d never thought of holidaying in Las Vegas until my husband’s friend won a contest for a week’s holiday there. My husband was lucky enough to go on the trip with him. When they came back, my husband was determined to take me there. He said, “You just have to see it to believe it.”

So, after looking through countless brochures and trawling the web, we settled on Harrah’s Hotel. It wasn’t one of the more themed ones, but it was in the centre of the Strip, our main criteria.

We arrived just before midnight (we came from the UK), and saw all the neon lights just before landing at the airport. It was eerie, seeing all these lights and around them complete drkness.

When we arrived at the hotel, I just couldn’t believe it. It was so big. Okay, John had told me it was big, but I couldn’t really grasp how big until I saw it for myself!

The staff were very helpful and our room was beautiful, with two double beds and an ensuite bathroom. We tried a few different hotels for breakfast, but I have to say, we though Harrah’s was the best, especially their pancakes and omlettes.

We hadn’t come for the gambling, but I did put a quarter in one of the slot machines and won two dollars. I quit while I was ahead! I don’t think I really have the gambling mentality!

We took a coach trip to the Grand Canyon for the day. It was December and it was cold, but I don’t think anyhting could beat the view we had for our picnic lunch! Yes, we had a picinic, in the middle of December with snow, but we hardly noticed the cold. What an amazing Grand Canyon Tour

At first John didn’t realise it was snow, he comes form Dover, where the cliffs are chalk, and said, “Oh, that bit must be made of chalk.”
I let him down gently!

We saw lots of show sat the hotels, and had lots of special offers in booklets that a lot of the hotels were giving out. The priced were a lot cheaper there than they were in the UK, so if you want to book any shows or trips, book them once you’re in Las Vegas.

The food was very reasonable and had excellent portions, a lot cheaper than London. We didn’t have the buffets every night, you could still get reasonably priced a la carte meals.

If you have time, go to the secret garden at the Miramar, to see dolphins and tigers from the magic show. The dolphins were amazing, and the water was so clean!

The statosphere tower is also a must if you don’t suffer from vertigo! What a view! Go up tiwce, once during the day and once at night, so you can see the lights. It’s like Christmas all the time there.

It was also very safe to walk about, because everything was open 24 hours, there are always lots of people about. We had not trouble at all, we wouldn’t have felt as safe walking about in London at home!

So go on, give Las Vegas a try, it isn’t all gambling!

If you go to one place in Arizona make sure you visit the Grand Canyon. Although once at there however you will find that there is very little in terms of a typical tourist base but there are plenty of breathtaking views and lookout points. You can also have the opportunity (but only if booked before hand with a tour company) to travel around the canyon on horseback or walking.

The views are breathtaking and are at some places awe inspiring, however it is easy to forget the many other canyons also in the region these include the Rainbow canyon whose colours are amazing especially seen at sunset, or sunrise. Bryce Canyon which although is smaller then the Grand Canyon still withholds the same respect the Grand Canyon does. This is canyon is a definite must for the tourist looking for amazing views.

I first visited the Grand Canyon some ten years ago, but recently went back with some friends who had no idea what to expect. We drove to the first lookout and guided them, eyes closed, to the edge. The look in their eyes when they saw it spoke volumes - which was good, because they didn’t say anything for long minutes.

That’s the thing with the Grand Canyon: it is just really, really BIG. Big on a scale that we can’t imagine from natural features in the UK. I can’t describe it, and photos won’t do it justice. It is one of those few things that everyone has to see at some point in their life. (more…)

Here are my top 5 tips for Grand Canyon:
1) Leave your car behind. There is an excellent free tram service which takes you all along the southern rim. Its easy to use and environmentally sound too
2) If you can afford it, take a helicopter ride. Peering over the edge and climbing down is all well and good, but you won’t realize the awesome splendour of the place until you’ve experienced a grand canyon helicopter tour. It was some of the best money we paid. It is a spectacularly beautiful
3) Try and visit the North rim. Most people stick to the south, and this is cerainly easier to get to; but if you can get to the north too, you will get a totally different feel and it is much less crowded
4) Go see the IMAX. There is a great IMAX film a few miles south of the south rim. It’s a litle cheesy but the views are amazing and you get some idea of hyow huge it really is
5) Walk. If you can descend even for an hour into the canyon, you will get a lot more out of it. The bright angel trail is probably the best.

When my girlfriend and I decided to visit the Grand Canyon we set out from Las Vegas knowing we only had a few hours to spare. Nothing could prepare us for the most spectacular, breathtaking natural wonder of the world. As soon as we got there, you could just feel your body tingle all over with excitement. When you look over the edge, a number of emotions come flooding through your mind and a sense of inspiration overwhelms you.

There are opportunities for organised trips that take you down into the canyons, hiking, horseback, helicopter rides - you can even canoe/water raft on the river through the canyons. We booked our tour through Paradise Found Tours by calling 1.877.260.5244, They were more than helpful.

So many different canyons to visit - rainbow canyon is beautiful. As in its name the rock is made up of different colours.
However my friend and I only had a few hours to see this marvel, whilst looking over the magnificent view it started to rain. Most people ran to their cars but whats a little rain when your from the UK, as we stood watching the rain come down a beautiful rainbow appeared over the canyon.

Most definitely a must see!!!!

The first thing that strikes you is the size. Its really big. I mean MASSIVE. Bigger than Big Brother. Bigger than Carol Voderman’s pay cheque. Bigger than Vanessa Feltz’ Buttocks. After that the sheer beauty of what you are beholding will leave you breathless. The Grand Canyon, one of the Seven Wonders of the World, is truly awesome. A product of 2 billion years of erosion through the Arizona landscape by the Colorado River, it is a gift from Mother Nature unsurpassed in magnitude and beauty. (more…)

The Grand Canyon is every bit as spectacular as it looks and everyone says it is - and you really get a feel for the size of it if you take a hike down into it and out again. Its one of the hardest hikes I’ve done, and you have to be really careful of the heat, but you do get quite a sense of achievement. We went to the North Rim of the Canyon - its apparently much quieter there than at the other side, and arrived in the evening, in time to watch the sun set, which is beautiful. Sunrise is just as good. The accommodation is in log cabins, which are great, although the choice of food is fairly limited - pizza or a posh restaurant.
One other piece of information - the medical services, should you need them, are very good - I was pretty ill and the nurse came to my cabin and sorted me out. Shame about the fifty dollar bill.

The Grand Canyon simply takes your breath away. I had seen the photo’s and read all about it, but no photo can capture the sheer vastness of it. However, I’m sure you’ve heard it all before because everyone says it, so I hope to pass on a few handy tips for visitors to the Canyon.  (more…)

We visited the north rim of the grand canyon in july 03. as we only had a day to explore we decided to take the cape royal drive in order to see as much as possible in the time we had.

Cape royal drive is an excellent drive to take when visiting the north rim. the drive is approximately 23 miles each way, and it is not a loop. you can either drive down and take each view point as it comes or drive straight to the end and then stop off on the way back, we chose the former. o you know what it is like to be truly gobsmacked? we were staying in flagstaff and so the drive to the grand canyon was a good few hours away. we arrived just after lunch, paid the small fee and drove through dry rocky country, not really knowing what to expect.

suddenly, on the left, we saw, well, the grand canyon, just kind of sitting there with a layby next to it, and some germans filming it with a camcorder. we swerved over and landed beside the fence. and that’s pretty much what we did for the rest of the day, driving along the southern rim of the canyon. the best time to see the canyon is undoubtedly at dawn or as dusk falls.

i have been lucky enough to visit the grand canyon 3 times. each time has been just a breathtaking as the previous. superlatives are often overused terms thanks to modern advertising - but trust me you will be using them after seeing nature’s greatest creation. (more…)

when you know you are going to reach that magical age of 30 people do one of a couple of things – take it gracefully with all that goes with it or bugger off somewhere were nobody can rub salt in the wound. i took the latter, more cowardly, option. coming up to 30th i had sought of hoped the land would just open and swallow me up. it didn’t but luckily a slight of geography sometime longer than 30 years ago (millions in fact) was going to do something similar. i don’t think theres a person on the planet who hasn’t had their socks blown off the first time they peer over the edge of this stunning wonder of the world. words can not describe the shear size and ore of this brutal open wound in the heart of the arizona desert. the colorado river, the tiny trickle at the bottom that twists and wriggles its way through the 24-mile (best chunk) chasm, is solely responsible for this remarkable piece of erosion. with the highest point of the burnt umber precipice towering 6200 feet, you can see how time and water and weather can defeat any geological challenge. the first thing that strikes you is the size.its really big. i mean massive. bigger than big brother. bigger than carol voderman’s pay cheque. bigger than vanessa feltz’ buttocks. after that the sheer beauty of what you are beholding will leave you breathless. the grand canyon, one of the seven wonders of the world, is truly awesome. a product of 2 billion years of erosion through the arizona landscape by the colorado river, it is a gift from mother nature unsurpassed in magnitude and beauty. ‘Trin Tragula was a dreamer, a thinker, a speculative philosopher or, as his wife would have it, an idiot, and she would nag him incessantly about the utterly inordinate amount of time he spent staring out into space, or mulling over the mechanics of safety pins, or doing spectographic analyses of pieces of fairy cake. how ever spectacular you think the grand canyon is, think again, and treble it. when you first peer over the precipice you are knocked senseless by its vastness and depth with the intense silence pressing on your eardrums. the north ridge is some 6000ft up and can be snow covered in june so take the fleece out of the boot before you begin your sightseeing. don’t get to near the edge folks or you may well see your camera plummeting to the bottom hitting every contour, some 28 seconds in total, it can happen. although we passed several of these signs and are still here to tell the tale!

whatever you expect of the grand canyon, i guarantee that in reality all preconceptions will be exceeded! take many camera films.

the canyon itself actually sneaks up on you - remember that unlike a huge mountain range this giant hole in the ground isn’t actually visible until you are standing on the edge and peering dowm into it’s sheer vastness. (more…)

I was lucky enough to visit the grand canyon a few years ago while on a trek america holiday. this is a type of adventure/walking holiday which i’ll write a review about at some point! We camped at the canyon for a few days allowing us to fully explore it. It is an amazing site and is really breathtaking. You don’t realise how large it is and how far it stretches until you take a grand canyon helicopter tour. (more…)

if you go to one place in arizona make sure you visit the grand canyon. although once at there however you will find that there is very little in terms of a typical tourist base but there are plenty of breathtaking views and lookout points. you can also have the opportunity (but only if booked before hand with a tour company) to travel around the canyon on horseback or walking.

the views are breathtaking and are at some places awe inspiring, however it is easy to forget the many other canyons also in the region these include the rainbow canyon whose colours are amazing especially seen at sunset, or sunrise. bryce canyon which although is smaller then the grand canyon still withholds the same respect the grand canyon does. this is canyon is a definite must for the tourist looking for amazing views (more…)

I visited the grand canyon on holiday in march of this year. it was part of a trip around california, nevada and arizona. i was with my son and we initially stayed in los angeles, las vegas, and williams, arizona. well, the first two are very famous, but where is williams? williams is the town that is closest to the main road that leads into the southern rim of the grand canyon. the nearest major town is flagstaff, about 20 miles down the freeway. it is also the starting point of the grand canyon railway. i can still recall very vividly being woken up in the early hours of the morning with its shrill whistle. the main reason for staying in williams was cost. the hotel offered excellent value because it was just off the beaten track but for us, it was ideal. i think we paid about $50 per night for a very spacious room. there are several hotels there and we stayed at the quality inn. i would really recommend this time of the year to visit because we had gloriously sunny days but there was still snow on the ground! kerr- rak! the lightning lit up the sky and the flash bounced off the walls of the canyon reflecting the different colours. in an instance there was white, grey, green and red - and then it was all over. the display probably only lasted a few seconds but it was one of those magic moments when nature exerts her power and was something i know i’ll never forget. i was at the grand canyon, arizona, usa. Yes, ok, when all is said and done it’s just a big hole in the ground. A very big hole. But to stand at the top of the crater as the sun sinks and watch the light fade across the rock face is one of the most awe-inspiring sights on earth. Visiting the Grand Canyon should definitely be on everybodys ‘before-I-die’ list

We visited the Grand Canyon National Park in November 2003. Seeing the Grand Canyon with your own eyes defies any depiction in a picture or movie. It is completely breathtaking and awesome. I always wanted to see the canyon and when I finally got the chance I must say that it exceeded the expectations that pictures and film had set. (more…)

I first visited the grand canyon some ten years ago, but recently went back with some friends who had no idea what to expect. we drove to the first lookout and guided them, eyes closed, to the edge. the look in their eyes when they saw it spoke volumes - which was good, because they didn’t say anything for long minutes.
