Deputy
Defense Secretary John Hamre issued a memorandum on 24
September 1998, which directs DoD and the individual
services to take both immediate and long-term steps to
protect the flow of information on the world wide web.
During the next 60 days, the Assistant Secretary of
Defense (C3I) will develop policy and procedural
guidelines that address the operational, public affairs,
acquisition, technology, privacy, legal and security
issues associated with the use of DoD web sites. In the
meantime, effective immediately, Hamre has ordered the
following information removed from all publicly
accessible DoD web sites: Plans or lessons learned which
would reveal sensitive military operations, exercises or
vulnerabilities. Any information that would reveal
movements of military assets or the location of units,
installations or personnel where uncertainty regarding
location is an element of the security of a military
plan or program. All personal information in the
following categories about U.S. citizens, DoD employees
and military personnel: 1) Social Security Numbers: 2)
Dates of Birth; 3) Home Addresses; and 4) telephone
numbers other than numbers of duty offices which are
appropriately made available to the general public.
Additionally, names, locations and any other identifying
information about family members of DoD employees and
military personnel must be removed. More information is
available at the Navy's INFOSEC Web Site (http://infosec.navy.mil/)
The NAVCOPS
Network, while not a U.S. Government website, freely
participates in this directive. If you meet #4 above,
please do not put it in the membership application or
choose to opt-out of the roster.
Our commitment
The NAVCOPS Network, by itself, will NEVER sell your
email address or any other information to anymore else.
We will, also, never give out any personal information
without first getting your written permission first. In
addition, most 'personal' records that we use to verify
your eligibility for membership are usually deleted or
stored shortly after your approval.
Information Automatically Logged
We use your IP address to help diagnose problems
with our server and to administer our Web site. Your IP
address is also used for other purposes such as when you
sign up for membership to ensure people who should not
be signing up for membership don't. After you are
approved your IP address is no longer used. Your IP
address is only visible to the webmaster when you use
the online forums or guest book. This is to ensure no
violations of policy are happening by the same person.
For example somebody is violating our code of conduct on
the forum...we can then block their IP address.
