Girls
Only New York Weekend (2 Days)
Where to Stay: The Melrose Hotel New York
is a majestic landmark building, centrally located on Manhattan's
east side. Walk
from the hotel to Central Park, several of Manhattan's finest
restaurants, or to any of Madison Avenue's most prestigious
shops including Polo/Ralph Lauren, Polo Sport, Calvin Klein,
DKNY, Giorgio Armani, Emporio Armani and Barney's. If that's
not enough, Bloomingdale's is only two minutes from the hotel.
In addition, The Melrose Hotel is located near many of the
most celebrated museums in the world, including The Museum
of Modern Art, The Whitney Museum of Art, The Metropolitan
Museum of Art and The Guggenheim Museum.
Day
1
Shopping at Rockefeller Center: This
historic New York Landmark is a fascinating combination of
contradictions: at once futuristic and classical, with soaring
buildings and underground tunnels, inspired by both hard-headed
commercialism and philanthropic idealism. Below street level,
the Center's buildings are linked by a pedestrian shopping
concourse. This is an oasis of order in the heart of the busiest
city in the world, a city within a city, functionally efficient
and aesthetically elegant.
Dinner and Dancing at Lotus: Three-level restaurant, bar and club space in the VIP-rich, Sex and the City-saturated Meatpacking district. So you’re either going to love it or find it too posy for words. The décor is done up in soft shades of caramel and chocolate while the spaces to base yourself include a two-room dining area (one by the bar); a balcony lounge furnished with sofas, carpets and cushions; and a large square basement space to shake your tail on and flirt with the guy in Armani flashing the Amex. The pricey menu is big on fish but there are some original ravioli and pasta creations thrown in. If you want fine dining though, go to Union Square. You come here for the designer-dressed crowd of suits and fashion types who love the drinks mixed and mashed to perfection by the dashing bar staff. House specialties? Try the muddled watermelon martini or the tasty muddled cucumber mix.
Afterhours
at the Roxy:
one of the club scene's oldest and most respected friends.
And there are a few things we must give them credit for: Primarirly,
for standing tall and staying open throughout the Guiliaini
administration. In addition, we must praise them for being
that 'needle in the haystack' club that places a tremendous
emphasis on putting world-renowned DJ's in the limelight and
giving them a home in NYC. I recommend calling beforehand,
because on a regular night at the Roxy, you will find your
typical, young, shirtless, B&T;, drug enhanced crowd. The recently
installed Phazon sound system is the best in the city and
the incredibly wide dancefloor is the perfect place for both
DJ and clubber.
Day
2
Lunch at Palacinka: SOHO. Palacinka - the name comes from the Croatian word for crêpes, the specialty here. Known by locals as a haven for tasty coffee and good eats, this café offers exceptional crêpes with culinary influences from France, Italy and even Yugoslavia. Polish off the last of your hunger with a sweet dessert crêpe. Eclectic interior includes vintage music and an assortment of relics from a bygone era.
Shopping at D&G: The diffusion line of Dolce and Gabanna, D&G is geared at a younger customer and is priced more affordably (though by no means inexpensively). A bit louder, trendier and more ostentatious than its mother company, D&G; is the ultimate destination for outrageous party clothing. Depending on your taste, the shopping experience can be anything from fantastic to headache-inducing, thanks to the pounding club-style music, quirky staff and "super fabulous" atmosphere. Not for the meek of heart.
434 W. Broadway (between Prince and Spring Sts); (212) 965-8000.
Dinner
at Michael's: Michael's,
with locations in both New York and Santa Monica, has been
serving California cuisine to power brokers and pop stars
for over 20 years. The casual yet modern dining experience
centers on well-prepared, inventive and borderline health-conscious
dishes made from fresh American ingredients. 24 West 55th
St., New York, NY 10019.
