Yes, You Can Bet on Tennis

You probably know there are large numbers of people who wager on football, baseball, soccer, cricket and other professional team sports. As well, of course, there are those parimutuel events where wagering is the main point--horse and greyhound racing, and jai alai for example.

What you might not be aware of is that there are quite a few folks who like to bet on the outcome of tennis matches.

Some people go so far as to claim that tennis is the best sport for making money with betting. It makes sense if you think about it a bit.

The first thing to consider is that in every tennis match, there can be only two possible outcomes. This is a much better situation than in those sports where ties (draws) are possible.

Although this would seem to be an insignificant factor, statisticians (and seasoned bettors) can demonstrate that over time, those occasional ties can really eat away at the possibility of earning long-term profits.

Another thing to ponder is the knowledge factor on the part of the people who compile the odds. Quite frankly, they are more likely to make errors when figuring the odds on a tennis match than on other sports. There are just too many factors for them to take into account--oftentimes they aren't even very familiar with a player who has just broken through the ranks to be a contender in a top match. The result many times is that two different bookmakers will set widely varying odds on the same event. This is why tennis often presents such great set-ups for making arbitrage bets.

Sports arbitrage (also known as "arbitrage sports betting" or "arbitrage sports trading") involves betting on both sides of a sporting event, so no matter what the result you walk away with a guaranteed profit. It's completely legal and simple to do once you understand it. For a more detailed introduction, with examples, see our special article on sports arbitrage.

The one difficulty to making bets on tennis is that many bookmakers will not take them. In part this is because of the complexity of setting the odds, as mentioned above. It is also due to the low margin or profit on a tennis match, usually around 5 percent. This is in contrast to the margin on major horse race, which can be around 25 percent.

Nevertheless, there are betting services that take tennis bets. Some are online.

Here at Tops4Tennis, we neither encourage nor discourage wagering on sports. But since betting does play a part in the overall tennis scene, we want to bring it to the attention of those visitors who would have an interest it. You as an individual must make your own decision whether or not to wager. We do advise gathering as much information as you can before taking the plunge.

For those who have decided to wager on tennis, the best events for this are generally agreed to be the U.S. Open, the French Open, the Australian Open, and the Wimbledon championship--in other words, the four Grand Slams. Experienced bettors say that the earlier rounds of all of these tournaments tend to produce the greatest profits.
