Dreams
Dreaming is among the most central, mysterious and valuable aspects of human life. Dreams have captured the interest of every culture in human history. Dreaming has been understood as offering everything from clues to the nature of reality, to glimpses at future events and necessary messages from within one’s own unseen psyche.
At Toltex, we believe that much is to be learned from the various cultural, spiritual and psychological approaches to dreaming. It is usually far too simplistic to say that dreams “are” any one thing, other than the pure perceptivity and creativity of the mind. People often turn the mysterious and fascinating experience of dreaming into a kind of magic; they often miss the actual beauty of what dreams do.
Dreams are more than symbols, though they play with and produce symbols; symbols that are both pure creation and as old as the human spirit. Dreams go many directions in time in order to show us their festival of ideas, images and possibilities; but they are not a time machine in a science-fiction sense.
Dreams are the best example of what the mind does, its purpose and capabilities. it turns matter, living matter, into pure thought, pure emotion, pure image. The feelings, emotions, images, memories and reasoning – our magical responsiveness to the world, that allows the wonder of being mentally and spiritually alive in the world – are free of the constraints of attention to daily tasks, of our bodies and social lives, our work and burdens.
The mind is free, in dreaming, to play with everything it has, to discover and create itself, and its possibilities in the world. As poet e.e. cummings wrote, "deeds cannot dream what dreams can do", attesting to the power of dreams to make possible new realities, for which there would be no energy nor inspiration during the day.
Who we are, the million different ways, wonderful and terrible, that we can see things, know our connections to the world and to each other, and come to be ready for our future – these things are woven like a tapestry in dreaming.
Dreaming is pure creativity; but as with any creativity, it sees what every color, sound feeling, object, could possibly mean, for you, for the self who is being dreamed – or who is dreaming (or, which is it?). A lifetime of experience, and a world of possibility, all tied into the single moment of sleep. Dreams can offer us so very much, more than any book can tell.
At Toltex, we have studied our dreams and the many ways dreams may be utilized for growth, insight and awareness of the self.
