Fishing Laguna Madre

The Laguna Madre is a 110 mile long body of water that separates the
Texas main land from a barrier Island called South Padre Island. The
salt content is generally high averaging between 35 to 45 thousand
parts per million. This is mainly due to the fact that no rivers flow into
the lagoon. The Laguna Madre is relatively shallow only averaging
about 3 feet but some areas reach as deep as 5. The high salt content
and shallow depths support a wide variety of algal flats, seagrassed,
aquatic wildlife, and birds. These shallow grasses are the main food
supply of the Redhead ducks during winter migration. According to the
Texas State Parks and Wildlife nearly 80% of the North American
population of Redhead's flock to the Laguna Madre for winter refuge.
Other birds that migrate the the laguna include Pintails, Mallards,
Canada Geese, and Canvasbacks. The laguna is also home to many
of Texas's most sought after sports fish including speckled trout,
redfish, drum, and flounder.
