The spotted sea trout, also known as the speckled trout in Texas, is one of the most sought after game fish in the gulf coast. Speckled trout can be found from the Yucatan peninsula all the way to the most north eastern tip of the United States. Speckled trout can live up to ten years. A trout’s growth rate is slow (only seventeen inches in the first two years). Between three and seven years of age a trout may grow an additional eight inches. Most trout that reach the 26 inch range our large females. The Texas state record is 33 ¾ inches and weighs 13 pounds 9 ounces. When you catch a trout over twenty six inches, consider yourself lucky. That fish is most likely 7 years of age or older and has seen many anglers. Speckled trout are normally a local fish. They stay in one general area most of the year. Trout will move into shallow areas like bays and estuaries during the summer time for spawning. This is one of the best times to fish for trout because they our protective of their nest and will attack all small predators to prevent their egg’s from being eaten. During the winter, trout will move to deeper, warmer water. The most common way anglers go after speckled trout is with live shrimp. Anglers commonly use a popping cork with a two to three foot leader. |
