Stockholm's only remaining medieval abbey was built in the late 1200s for the Franciscans. The church is a burial place for Swedish kings and aristocracy for more than four centuries. Amongst The most famous figures interred within are King Gustavus Adolphus, hero of the Thirty Years' War, and the warrior King Karl XII, renowned for his daring invasion of Russia. The latest of the 17 Swedish kings to be put to rest here was Gustav V, in 1950. The redbrick structure, distinguished by its delicate iron fretwork spire, is rarely used for services.
