Satellite navigation systems are a fast-growing category
of new toys for gadget-loving car drivers. Thales Navigation has
just announced its top-of-the-range version, the Magellan Roadmate
700.
This claims to be the first plug 'n' drive GPS system,
and comes pre-loaded with detailed mapping of the entire U.S. and
Canada, so you can travel the country with no need to download new
data. A single seamless database, built-in to a 10 GB hard drive,
contains all major city streets as well as federal, state and county
roads and highways.
Cheaper PDA-based devices require users to download
the neccessary maps.
The RoadMate 700 has a three inch color screen. and
maps can be moved with a touch of a finger. Its memory will accept
up to 100 addresses, and will guide you to your destination with
friendly audible instructions. Thales say the device is accurate
to within three metres.
Its database includes over 2 million listings in over
40 categories, including restaurants, gas stations, ATMs, historical
monuments, parks and more! You can easily select your destination
by name or category to find the nearest gas station, historical
monument, rest stop, or restaurant along your route.
The journey planning options allow you to select your
route by shortest time, shortest distance, least use of freeways
and most use of freeways.
Thales is clearly aiming to attract the serious travelling
professional and well as keen road warriors. Competitors may point
to the premium price, but Thales insist that the Roadmate 700 is
competitive because it avoids the hassle and cost of downloading
maps. Its purpose built controls also make it easier to control
than the typical PDA.
